Mechanical Engineer II
Dedrone by AxonAbout the role
Company Overview: Dedrone is the world’s most trusted smart airspace security company. Hundreds of commercial, government and military customers around the world rely on Dedrone’s comprehensive, command and control (C2) solution to protect against the persistent and escalating threat from drones while enabling “good” drones to fly. By leveraging AI/ML, Dedrone is the only solution that provides continuous, autonomous interrogation and verification of drones that enables both multi-sensor and multi-mitigation options onto a single fused "pane-of-glass". Whether on-premise / air-gapped or in the cloud, Dedrone customers can easily detect, track, identify, analyze, and mitigate drone threats.
Your Impact:
We are seeking a talented Mechanical Engineer to lead the design and prototyping of advanced hardware systems, including drone-related components and embedded systems. This role emphasizes mechanical design, thermal analysis, prototyping, and system integration. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in CAD modeling, structural optimization, and hands-on prototyping, with a focus on creating durable and high-performance designs for diverse operational environments.
Location: Onsite at our offices in Mesa & Scottsdale, Arizona.
What You'll Do:
- Develop hardware solutions, including structural components, enclosures, and integrated systems for embedded electronics and microcontrollers.
- Create conceptual designs, considering factors such as cost, size, weight, and environmental ratings.
- Optimize designs for thermal management, mechanical stability, and manufacturability.
- Build and test prototypes using fabrication tools and techniques (e.g., 3D printing, CNC machining).
- Validate new designs through mechanical testing and performance analysis.
- Perform stress, thermal, and structural analyses using industry-standard tools (e.g., SolidWorks Simulation, Ansys).
- Oversee the product lifecycle, from concept to production readiness, ensuring designs meet durability and reliability standards.
- Document and manage design specifications, production processes, and compliance requirements.
- Work with cross-functional teams, including electrical engineers and software developers, to ensure seamless integration of mechanical and electronic systems.
- Address technical challenges and provide innovative solutions to meet project goals.
What You Bring:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field (focus on thermal analysis preferred).
- Proven experience in mechanical design and system integration, preferably in industries involving advanced hardware systems.
- Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Fusion 360) for 3D modeling and detailed engineering drawings.
- Hands-on experience with prototyping tools and fabrication equipment (e.g., drills, bandsaws, 3D printers).
- Knowledge of embedded systems, microcontrollers (e.g., ESP32, Arduino), and single-board computers (e.g., Raspberry Pi).
- Strong understanding of engineering principles, including heat transfer, EMI, and shock/vibration.
- Experience with simulation tools for thermal and structural analysis.
- Familiarity with MIL STDs and designing for harsh environments.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to identify and resolve technical challenges.
- Excellent communication skills to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams and present complex ideas.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with high levels of ambiguity.
