We are seeking a highly experienced and versatile Staff Data Engineer to join our dynamic Data & AI team. In this critical role, you will work directly with the Head of Digital Engineering Operations to explore, map, and document data across the organization. This role is responsible for understanding how data moves through existing systems, translating spreadsheet based workflows into scalable database designs, and supporting both operational PowerBI reporting and application development initiatives.
The ideal candidate is a strong data generalist comfortable working with SQL, database modeling, ETL, AWS and Power BI reporting who can collaborate with developers and influence technical decision making.
Travel for team and client meetings is required, typically up to 15%. This is a US-based position.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyze existing systems, spreadsheets, and data flows to design efficient, well-structured databases (e.g. Postgres, etc.).
- Build and maintain queries, data pipelines, and transformation logic from various internal systems.
- Collaborate with the application development team (React front end) to design and support data architectures for new internal dashboards and automation tools.
- Create clear documentation and visual artefacts showing system relationships, data lineage, and integrations.
- Develop business-critical metrics, KPIs, and analytical models to support decision-making.
- Support the organization’s use of Power BI (and other BI tools), providing data models and query logic rather than acting solely as a report designer.
- Assist with ongoing data gathering, cleaning, collation, and optimization processes.
- Work with teams across the organization to understand how data is used and ensure alignment with operational goals.
Qualifications & Experience
- 7+ years of Data Engineering experience
- Strong proficiency in SQL, database design, and relational database technologies (Postgres preferred).
- Proven Experience using AWS database services like RDS, DynamoDB, etc.
- Demonstrated experience translating spreadsheet-based processes into scalable, maintainable databases and data models.
- Experience navigating, analyzing, and documenting complex systems and their data flows.
- Ability to produce clear technical documentation and visual system data mappings.
- Experience building or supporting business metrics, KPIs, and data-driven decision-making frameworks.
- Hands-on experience with BI tools such as Power BI (data models, DAX, business logic; not just visual design).
- Exposure to application development workflows and the ability to collaborate with developers (React, automation tools, etc.).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Proactive, curious mindset with a desire to understand how systems connect and how data supports business operations.
- Comfortable working autonomously while coordinating across multiple teams.
- Bonus: Python, or light development skills.
