Sr Design Engineer

Job Summary
Lead development of designs and estimates of multiple infrastructure and capital projects to produce a safe, maintainable and reliable railroad. Work with the Project Manager and coordinate with CSX Track, Signal & Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Transportation and various consultants to design and estimate project costs. Work is strategic in nature and is carried out independently while still providing guidance to Designer I and Designer II positions.

Primary Activities and Responsibilities

• Develop from concepts, working across multiple disciplines and coordinating with the Project Manager and Project Sponsor, preliminary and detail designs on CSX Infrastructure projects directing General Engineering Consultant (GEC) and Signal Engineering Consultant (SEC). Develop construction phasing plans (multi-year, multi-phase projects) and develop corresponding budget year estimates. Use business operating goals and forecasting to design product(s) at a macro level.
• Work with CSX Signal Construction, CSX Track & Civil Construction, CSX Environmental Group, CSX Real Property, Property Services and CSX Transportation Group to develop overall construction plan
• Develop project estimates for the construction of Infrastructure Projects and prepare Authority For Expenditure's (AFE's) for review and input. Evaluate requirements for funding and analyze impacts to overall project cost.
• Participate with CSX Standards to evaluate new signal and track equipment and designs to ensure conformity to CSX Safety and Standard Policies.
• Review invoices and Contractor Expenses associated with Infrastructure Projects and recommend approval/rejection to the Project Manager.
• Attend Quarterly Quality Reviews with GEC / SEC.
• Participate with Engineering Dept. Safety Initiatives including Monthly Safety Overlap Meetings, best practice job reviews and safety incident reviews.
• Miscellaneous activities and responsibilities as assigned by manager

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree/4-year Degree
• 5 or more years of experience in Engineering (civil, structural, electrical, electronic, or mechanical)

Equivalent Minimum Qualifications

• Associates Degree/2-year Degree
• 7 or more years of experience in Engineering (civil, structural, electrical, electronic, or mechanical)

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree/4-year Degree
• 7 or more years of experience in Engineering (civil, structural, electrical, electronic, or mechanical)
• Professional Engineer (PE)

Knowledge and Skills

• Knowledge of CSX or American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way (AREMA) Signal Engineering Standards and Railroad Engineering General Standards
• In-depth knowledge of engineering methods including design, estimating, surveying with strengths in funding and estimating complex design
• Advanced Oracle skills
• Advanced Project Management Skills including scheduling software
• Advanced skills in Microsoft Office Tools (Excel, Power Point, Word, Outlook)
• Leadership skills
• Basic computer-aided design (CAD) skills such as AutoCAD and/or MicroStation
• Proven time management skills to achieve deadlines and within prescribed timelines
• Strong business acumen to understand how business operating goals and forecasting effect scope of design
• Ability to create, read, and understand design drawings and specifications
