Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads – both students and employers – for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 25,000 students in 2024-25. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,399 graduates in 2024-2025, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 33% enrolled at TCC. TCC’s institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
Support the mission and vision of TCC by assisting potential, new, transfer, and continuing students (both traditional and distance learners) via email, phone, and other virtual platforms with understanding programs of study (curricular and non-curricular), course planning, career planning, preliminary evaluations of transfer credit, interpretation of math and English placement, course enrollment protocols, as well as program-specific applications and general information on TCC policies and procedures with an emphasis on academic progress, graduation, and transfer. This position also supports the organizational operations by leading some processes to ensure adequate delivery of services. Additionally, this position will serve as the main advising point of contact for the Accelerated Degree Program.
Functional Responsibilities:
• Answer questions via email, phone, and other virtual platforms relating to educational transfer and career planning.
• Provide current information to assist students in their decision-making process.
• Provide support and referrals as needed to ancillary departments within the college, including Financial Aid, CMVE, ESL, and student support services.
• Work collaboratively with other TCC departments and personnel to support the learning of all students.
• Document advising conversations from all platforms in Navigate and SalesForce (as applicable).
• Attend office, department, and college-wide advising meetings.
• Answer emails during holidays and weekends.
• Lead weekly staffing efforts for virtual advising staff.
• Prepare and disseminate reports to advising leadership on virtual advising activity.
• Attend professional development trainings, including some in-person events such as Advising Institute and Student Affairs Kick-Off.
• Lead advisor for the Accelerated Degree Program, including, but not limited to: scheduling virtual appointments, maintain open communication pathways, assess student needs and connect with campus resources to support student retention and completion within one year, maintain data collection and reporting to advising leadership, and assist with programming specific to this population.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
