Athletic Academic Advisement Assistant

Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Two (2) years of full-time experience in an academic advising, counseling, or student services setting.

Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Counseling, Higher Education Administration, Education, or related field. Additional years (3+) of full-time experience in an academic advising, counseling, or student services setting. Understanding of NCAA Compliance Rules (played a Division I, II, or III sport, coached in collegiate athletics, or as a staff member in a collegiate athletic program). Previous experience with a Division I Athletic Program. Experience in higher education. Experience working with at-risk students.

Brief Description of Duties:
The Athletic Academic Advisement Assistant will be responsible for providing academic support and student services to Stony Brook student-athletes. They will assist in the evaluation, monitoring, and development of the academic advising, tutoring, and academic progress and Life Skills programs in place for all student-athletes. The Athletic Academic Advisement Assistant will execute all duties in compliance with NCAA policies and procedures. Incumbent must have a commitment to the successful academic and personal development of Stony Brook student-athletes.

At-Risk Student Athletes Program Planning

• Create and implement detailed plans of action for student-athletes considered academically at-risk to assist in their academic success. This includes selection of appropriate courses, implementation of a tailored study hall model, organization of an appropriate plan for Coaching Staff and Sport Supervisor communication and involvement, as well as responsibility for monitoring and facilitating the at-risk students’ academic endeavors on a daily basis with assignments, tests, and deadlines. This includes, but is not limited to, assigning tutors for all classes in an at-risk student’s course load, or serving as a tutor for at-risk students, so as to best address his/her learning needs. As appropriate, will confer with the Director of Student-Athlete Academic Success campus advising office and the Student Accessibility and Support Center to assist in these processes, but realizing the ultimate responsibility rests within the Department of Athletics.

Team Study Hall

• Coordinate the best system for successful individual and team study halls for assigned teams. Under the direction of the Director of Student-Athlete Academic Success, the Athletic Academic Advisement Assistant will assume a primary role in the day-to-day operations of the study halls for all Stony Brook teams within the Goldstein Family Student- Athlete Development Center.

Academic Advising

• Assist in the development, assessment and implementation of the academic advising services offered to Stony Brook student-athletes as such services relate to NCAA progress-toward-degree requirements and established institutional requirements. As assigned by the Director of Student-Athlete Academic Success, the Athletic Academic Advisement Assistant will be personally responsible for the academic advising of several assigned teams and the respective individual athletes.

Recruiting

• Serve as the Academic recruiting contact for prospective student-athletes on assigned teams, meeting with students and families either in person when possible, or by phone. If time permits and the student and/or Coach inquires, also serve as a liaison to Undergraduate Departments and/or the Student Accessibility Support Center.

Tutoring

• Assist in the coordination of the tutorial program for all student-athletes. Responsibilities may include interviewing, hiring, and training tutors, scheduling tutorial sessions, preparing necessary paperwork for payroll, and evaluating tutors with feedback from Academic Advisors, faculty, and student-athletes; Also responsible for ensuring to function within the rules of the NCAA and the institution.
