Job Description

Demonstrates competency in performing clerical duties and clinical support consistent with the mission and values of the University of Maryland Rehabilitation and Orthopaedic Institute (UMROI) and in accordance with regulatory requirements.  Serves as a fully engaged member of the interdisciplinary patient care services team.  Participates in cost effective strategies that optimize patient outcomes.

  • Electronic/Paper documentation
    • Accurately and concisely maintains patient care records along the continuum from admission to discharge    
    • Attends required training on electronic Medical record documentation, electronic admission and discharge process, and HIPAA requirements.  
    • Demonstrates ability to write or electronically document accurately in the medical record and/or file paper documents as verified by chart review.
    • Performs basic computer and clerical skills.
      • Communication/ Collaboration
        • Develops communication skills to enhance networking with other clinical and clerical staff.
        •  Uses active listening principles to promote interdisciplinary teamwork, patient safety, and customer service.
        •  Demonstrates ability to articulately and clearly use verbal, telephone, and/or written skills.
        • Maintain customer service skills whenever dealing with difficult personalities and practice service recovery as needed.
        • Responds to any safety violations or emergency situations in an appropriate manner.
        • Highly effective verbal communication skills including courtesy, resourcefulness and efficiency in answering questions, giving directions, locating staff and explaining hospital/departmental policies and procedures are necessary.
        • Verbal communication skills may include communicating with an interdisciplinary team, patients, and families. 
        • Effective writing skills are also required in order to take messages and maintain miscellaneous records, receipts, reports and logs.
      • Assemble admission charts/breakdown discharge charts.
      • File documents and loose paperwork in charts     
      • Infection Control:  Standard Precautions, Isolation Precautions
      • Respond to patient call lights
      • Accurate keyboard skills 
      • Maintain Unit communication board
      • Orient new staff
      • STAR/EPIC/iPath 
      • Maintain downtime charting needs.
      • Collect data per Patient Care Manager
      • Activate emergency response systems (RRT/911/Code)
      • Medical Emergency Preparedness: Current CPR
      • Distributes patient mail and deliveries
      • Transportation arrangements for clinic appointments, etc.
      • Respect for individuals, Customer Service, Teamwork and Collaboration:
        • Models excellence in customer service behaviors.  Identifies and acts on opportunities to respond to customer requirements.  Takes action to prevent potential customer complaints.
        • Initiates and reports service recovery steps taken in response to customer concerns.
        • Demonstrates the ability to perform clerical tasks and clinical support according to the age, culture, ethnicity, spirituality, and individual diagnostic needs of the persons served.
        • Uses hands off communication to convey pertinent patient/clinical information to patient/family or appropriate clinician within the interdisciplinary team.
        • Maintains confidentiality of patient information (HIPAA).
        • Serves as collaborative member of the interdisciplinary team.
        • Provides an inclusive environment for peers, orienteers and students.
        • Provides performance feedback as requested within peer review systems.
        • Voices difference in opinion professionally through appropriate channels.
  • Leadership, Clinical and/or Technical Skills:
    • Maintains, updates, and protects the integrity of patients Medical Records.  Assumes efficient transfer of completed medical record upon discharge/transfer.
