The Specialist, Communications is accountable for overseeing essential initiatives within both internal and external communications. This includes developing and executing communications plans, conducting research, managing logistics, coordinating media events, and providing comprehensive support to the communications team.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities (*Essential Duties)

  • Write, edit and publish content for internal communications, including newsletters, announcements, emails and other publications.
  • Manage USO intranet sites in coordination with other departmental leaders.
  • Generate media event briefs and manage the team project platform.
  • Responsible for media coverage analysis and development of metric reports for leadership review.
  • Devise talking points and formal communications plans for stakeholders.
  • Develop social media content.
  • Liaise with external consultants and third-party partners.
  • Support communications needs for internal events and program initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Specifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in journalism, communications or related field.
  • 3-5 years work experience in a communications, marketing, public relations and/or journalism support role. Relevant experience in a not-for-profit, military, multicultural and/or global organization preferred.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in business writing and proofreading across a variety of delivery platforms.
  • Strong interpersonal, customer service and problem-solving skills. Ability to interact with USO Leadership, the general public and military audiences at a variety of levels with integrity and professionalism.
  • Proficiency using computers and electronics equipment. General knowledge of various software, applications, and programs including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite, newsletter and media monitoring software. Experience with SharePoint and general knowledge of HTML and/or basic photo-video editing preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment related to controversial and/or culturally sensitive subjects. Ability to handle confidential information with tact and poise.
  • Must show initiative, self-motivation, and attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple projects with competing priorities. Ability to quickly and easily adapt to changing organizational needs.
  • Ability to achieve desired results while working collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain proper credentials necessary to access USO Center locations and facilities including but not limited to security, credit and/or background screening, SOFA status, valid driver’s license.
  • Must be a strong advocate of the USO’s mission.
