Join an innovative team conducting groundbreaking research in defense of our nation. The Nevada National Security Sites (NNSS) is seeking outstanding candidates for a Distinguished Mechanical Engineer supporting the Scorpius Accelerator. The Advanced Sources and Detectors (ASD) Project consists of the development of Scorpius, a multiple-pulse, single-axis linear induction accelerator radiographic system. The radiographic system will be used to study the late time stages of implosions involving sub-critical quantities of special nuclear material within the Principal Underground Laboratory for Subcritical Experimentation (PULSE) tunnel complex at the Nevada National Security Site. Scorpius involves significant mechanical systems that work with electrical and control systems to precisely deliver an electron beam that will enable collection of radiographic data in support of this important national security mission.
The successful candidate will:
- Provide overarching technical leadership and strategic direction for the Scorpius machine, collaborating closely with contractors and technical leads for the Accelerator, Injector, Downstream Transport, Solid State Pulsed Power, and Detector subsystems. Ensure the successful delivery and operational readiness of the radiographic capability, demonstrating recognized technical leadership, creativeness, and judgment across a broad program scope. Solutions will be comprehensive in technical and business aspects and exhaustive at all levels, and cross-disciplinary.
- Lead design engineering and configuration management efforts for the Scorpius machine. This includes developing and implementing innovative solutions to significant engineering challenges during Scorpius installation at the Integrated Test Stand (ITS) and PULSE, in collaboration with NNSS and partner mechanical engineers. This role will sustain a high level of achievement and/or leadership in advancing science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) or its application.
- Mentor and develop early career engineers, facilitating their growth through frequent interactions, coaching opportunities, and appropriate delegation of responsibilities. This includes coaching and motivating team members while promoting team interaction. The successful candidate will foster an environment that encourages the development of intellectual property, patents, and publishing within the team.
- Develop and implement strategic plans for building and sustaining a machine-focused engineering organization (Cygnus, EUS, Scorpius) to support operations at PULSE. This will be performed in collaboration with ECSE and SEO leadership, ensuring alignment with defined corporate goals and MSTS policies.
- Ensure effective communication and implementation of project engineering requirements, working with ASD Technical Leads and NNSS System Leads. This involves coordinating complex projects of substantial complexity and broad scope, requiring interdisciplinary coordination, and serving as an expert advisor and consultant to internal senior management on difficult and critical technical issues.
- Develop and/or update operational procedures for critical components of the accelerator, with the primary objective of maximizing uptime. This includes guiding others in analyzing and solving unique problems related to operational efficiency and reliability.
