About the role

Leidos is seeking a Sr. Systems Engineer to support large-scale migration and operations on a large, high-profile DOD contract. The I3TS program provides enterprise-wide IT support to enable the Defense Threat Reduction Agency’s (DTRA) Information Management & Technology Directorate (ITD) to consolidate, modernize, and continuously innovate the delivery of IT services and mission capabilities to DTRA’s internal and external mission partners operating in CONUS and OCONUS locations.

The Sr Systems Engineer will be primarily responsible for the engineering and operation of the DTRA Integration, Test and Experimentation Center (DITEC).This includes the operation of the platform infrastructure as well as the provisioning and management of sandbox environments for DITEC customers to test and experiment in. The engineer will deploy new Windows and Linux servers and systems and provide support for maintaining and enhancing on-premise and cloud infrastructure as well as the day-to-day maintenance support for troubleshooting Linux/Windows systems and servers and the configuration of the DITEC operating environment. Architecting and engineering future-state enhancements and evolution of the DITEC environment is also in scope for this role.

This role requires an individual with technical expertise deploying administering the full lifecycle of Linux and Windows platforms. The candidate will provide engineering support to develop automations for the building and patching Linux and Windows servers, Red Hat Satellite and Ansible Automation Platform in support of maintenance, upgrades and new systems being deployed. This role is responsible for interacting with product owners across multiple customers and internal DTRA teams, as well as working other engineers to troubleshoot problems for systems and network environments. This role analyzes recurring problems and initiates solutions for preventing recurrence and analyzes existing infrastructure for tuning/performance enhancements.

The engineer may also provide support for engineering problems and solutions outside of the DITEC environment as workload requirements demand and as bandwidth permits.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Perform best practice engineering support for an integration environment consisting of Linux and Windows Servers.

  • Provide advice, technical consultation, and Tier 3/Tier 4 support guidance by analyzing and resolving problems and evaluating alternative means of satisfying user requirements.

  • Maintain identity, credential, and access management within the DITEC environment.

  • Engage in requirements gathering and validation with stakeholder groups and end users to understand and address current needs across the integration environment

  • Stay abreast of emerging/future trends to facilitate evolution and growth of the DTRA IT environment in general and the DITEC platform specifically.

  • Research, test, and deploy security patches and vulnerability mitigation and remediation configuration changes.

  • Provide support for the implementation, troubleshooting and maintenance of complex IT systems. 

  • Perform automation tasks through scripting and testing.

  • Effectively support a blend of operational and test network engineering/administration activities.

  • Create and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and technical documentation.

  • Provide follow-up reports (technical findings, feedback, and resolution steps taken) for infrastructure maintenance activities, problem resolution, and similar platform management activities.

  • Execute customer test plans as provided and prepare test reports with findings for customer analysis

  • Assess customer solutions for compliance with all DTRA information assurance and security protocols.  Provide pre-deployment (baseline) and post-deployment environment scans to identify vulnerabilities or configuration issues introduced by product testing scenarios.

  • Maintain and provide artifacts, and testify to product networthiness at Engineering Review, Configuration Management, and similar IT approval boards.

Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Science, with 12-15 years' experience or Master's degree with 10-13 years of experience (additional years of directly applicable experience may be accepted in lieu of a degree).

  • Experience building, configuring, patching and maintaining Windows/Linux Servers via Ansible or other automation platforms.
