About the role

Responsibilities

Peraton is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer (Automation) to join our team of qualified and diverse individuals on on our Department of State (DOS) Consular Affairs Enterprise Infrastructure Operations (CAEIO) Program. CAEIO supports the DOS Bureau of Consular Affairs (CA), providing IT Operations and Maintenance to modernize the legacy networks, applications, and databases supporting CA services globally.  

 

The Senior Systems Engineer (Automation) will be a member of the CA/CST CAEIO Engineering Team that works closely with other CAEIO team members, CST application/system owners, and government leadership to ensure Consular Affairs mission success. 

 

Responsibilities 

  • Provide technical leadership in architecting, designing, and implementing IT Automations that improve efficiency, availability, and consistency for mission essential applications/systems/platforms across a complex, worldwide, mission-critical environment. 
  • Develop Automation Proof of Concepts, Pilots, and Production Implementations. This role leverages elevated/administrative rights to assist in the development and implementation of automation capabilities in pre-production and live environments.  
  • Support Enterprise Automation for modern and legacy platforms to identity management, networks, databases, storage, monitoring, CI/CD pipeline tools, on-premises infrastructure (to include containerized environments), and cloud capabilities (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS). 
  • Support capability/technology roadmaps that enhance delivery of automation for Consular Affairs. 
  • Participate in enterprise architecture, cloud, and modernization working groups. 
  • Prioritize and manage work using Scaled Agile methodology to enhance service delivery. 
  • Work closely with the Automation Manager, Engineering Lead, Government Customer, and other Systems Engineers/Architects to prioritize automation efforts and ensure successful integration of modernized services. 
  • Leverage Agile tool (Jira) to track all engineering features, stories, and tasks.  
  • Support cross-team collaboration across CAEIO program where automation is critical to mission success.    
  • Ensure automation efforts meet requirements in the areas of security, capacity, and availability.  Work with other CA organizations and vendors to effectively design/integrate/test/deploy/support automation capabilities in pre-production and production environments. 
  • Provide monthly input for Automation accomplishments reported to the Government customer.  
  • Ensure all configuration changes follow approved change management processes and security configuration guidelines.  
  • Support government customer by completing ad hoc tasks and responding to data calls. 

Core work schedule:  Monday - Friday, 7:00 AM - 4:00 PM 

 

Work location: Hybrid: remote AND up to one day per week in the office in either Sterling, VA (near Dulles Airport) or Washington, DC 

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications 

  • U.S. citizenship and an active SECRET government security clearance with the ability to obtain TOP SECRET, if needed.
  • 7-10 years’ experience engineering mission critical/essential capabilities for the Federal Government. 
  • 5+ years’ experience developing/implementing automation in enterprise environments.
  • Experience working with system owners to identify automation requirements, design/develop solutions, and integrate in production and pre-production environments.  
  • Experience with Oracle Linux and RHEL, networking components, physical servers, Oracle databases, virtual infrastructure, and containerized environments.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Experience working directly with government customers. 
  • Ability to thrive in a high-tempo environment. 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Experience with enterprise systems including Identity Management, Oracle/SQL Databases, Monitoring, Web/Application Servers, Network Devices (Firewalls, Switches, Load Balancers), Virtual Infrastructure, and Cloud (IaaS/PaaS/SaaS and others.   
  • Experience with CI/CD pipeline tools and Ansible Automation Platform (AAP).
  • Working knowledge of automation relative to programming languages (Python, YAML, Shell, Java, C/C++, etc. 
  • Experience automating solutions with high availability, disaster recovery, and in accordance with RMF and DoD STIGs or DS Security Guides. 
  • Industry relevant certifications. 
  • Experience working on/for Department of State IT projects.  

Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree with 8 years’ experience or MS degree and 6 years’ ex
