Crater Health District is a part of the Virginia Department of Health. Crater Health District comprises the Cities of Hopewell, Emporia and Petersburg, as well as the Counties of Sussex, Greensville, Surry, Prince George, and Dinwiddie. Travel within the above-mentioned localities to provide services as required.

This is a non-supervisory leadership role that provides nursing expertise as a member of the Crater District Communicable Disease Team and may be eligible for one (1) day a week telework after successfully completing a 6-month on the job training at the supervisor's discretion. Job responsibilities include, but not limited to, monitoring online systems and other epidemiology technology to identify trends/outbreaks. Participates in vaccine preventable illness response, and assists in public health emergencies, as needed.
Administers vaccinations and collects necessary specimens from all age groups for disease identification. Exercises sound nursing judgment. Will be the subject matter expert that provides guidance and recommendation per CDC on infection control polices to stakeholders and community partners. This position works closely with the district Epidemiology and Environmental Health team and will rotate on-call duties in response to reportable illnesses and diseases. Must have the ability to conduct presentations to the public or other stakeholders on health-related topics. Will support other nursing programs, as needed.

VDH requires all Health-Care Personnel (HCP) to provide documentation of immunization or evidence of immunity to the following: hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella; a one-time dose of tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine regardless of the interval since the last dose of tetanus-diphtheria (Td) vaccine was administered (Td or Tdap boosters shall be received every 10 years); and the current year's seasonal influenza vaccination.

Requires unrestricted licensure as an RN in Virginia or compact state. Must be certified in Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR.

Minimum Qualifications

• Requires licensure as an RN in Virginia or compact state and BLS certified.
• Demonstrated critical thinking skills to analyze problems, situations and suggest solutions
• Skills in health, physical assessment and/or case management
• Ability to function independently, prioritize and organize work.
• Basic knowledge of nursing science and medical terminology.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively present health topics to the public.
• Experience or ability to review, analyze data and statistics, and produce reports
• Work effectively as a member of the multidisciplinary health care team
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Experience working with diverse cultural backgrounds

Additional Considerations

• Certified in Infection Control (CIC) preferred and/or experience in hospital or long-term care facility infection control
• Public health experience
