The Excess & Surplus (E&S) Underwriter, Personal Lines position is key for the development, growth, and retention of profitable high value E&S Personal Lines portfolio in accordance with company guidelines and standards. This position evaluates new and renewal business using appropriate underwriting tools and data to determine appropriate premiums and ensure the portfolio's profitability. This role requires an entrepreneurial mindset with a proven track record in underwriting high value properties greater than $2 million in excess and surplus lines. 


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Evaluate new and renewal business for homeowner’s insurance including but not limited to high-value homes and excess/surplus risks, analyzing property characteristics, inspections, location, and overall risk factors.
  • Evaluate underwriting data and develop creative problem-solving strategies.
  • Determine appropriate premium levels based on the individual risk profile, ensuring alignment with company guidelines and market standards. Recommend additional premium adjustments when necessary.
  • Stay informed about industry trends, market conditions, and competitive landscape to make informed underwriting decisions.
  • Work closely with agency partners and other stakeholders to gather necessary information, clarify risk details, and provide insights on underwriting decisions. Develop relationships with retail agents through close communication.
  • Maintain accurate and thorough records of all underwriting decisions, risk assessments, and communications. Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements and internal policies.
  • Provide guidance to agency partners on underwriting requirements and risk management strategies for high-value properties.
  • Participate in underwriting audits and performance reviews to identify areas for improvement and implement best practices in underwriting processes.
  • Mentor junior underwriters and participate in training programs to enhance team capabilities and knowledge.

Requirements

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Business, Marketing, Underwriting, Statistics, Finance, Risk Management or related field preferred. 


EXPERIENCE

Minimum of two (2) years of relevant work experience in key functional areas Underwriting, Pricing, Claims or Operations required.

Experience in Excess & Surplus Personal Lines or Commercial Underwriting preferred.


CERTIFICATIONS

Insurance designations, Product Management Certifications, or Project Management Certifications are desirable.


LICENSES

Valid Driver’s License required.


Preferred work arrangement hybrid on-site, but remote candidates will be considered based on qualifications and experience.
