About the role

Department Overview

The Finance and Accounting Analyst 2 performs complex accounting activities related to the maintenance of internal and external financial records and reports.  The purpose of this position is to support the healthcare accounting section and close cycles to ensure proper GAAP is followed.  

 

This position uses judgment and professional skills to help determine and implement appropriate accounting policies and procedures.  It includes the performance of reconciliations, research, queries of transactions and the preparation of financial and audit supporting workpapers.  Responsibilities involve preparation of key monthly accruals and journal entries, FQHC accounting and audit workpaper preparation, variance analysis, assistance with the preparation of financial surveys related to healthcare and overseeing the Internal Billing System.  This position also supports the Reimbursement team in working with departments to compile Hospital Effort Certification (HEC) reporting requirements. 

Function/Duties of Position

  • Assists in the monthly close process for the OHSU Healthcare accounting section. Analyzes complex accounting transactions for completeness and proper recording and classification, resolves and corrects coding problems, apprises and escalates resolution of any issues noted in the analysis. Analyzes relevant data and prepares key monthly accruals and journal entries, including journal entries for utilities, PNTB, employee leave and compensated absences, GME, and Eliminating Entries. Reconciles related accounts including accounts receivable, accounts payable and other general ledger accounts for both income statements and balance sheet.
  • Assists in the monthly close process for Family Medicine at Richmond FQHC and with the annual OHSU Healthcare and FQHC audits which include the preparation and validation of support schedules and other workpapers provided to external auditors.  
  • Assists with the preparation of financial surveys related to healthcare including Databank and Bond Rating Agency surveys and other internal and external surveys as needed to support the VP of Finance & Accounting, the Accounting Manager and Finance & Accounting Analyst 3.
  • Responsible for overseeing the Internal Billing System (IBS) including assisting the Service Centers with override transactions, researching, troubleshooting and analyzing any issues that arise with the IBS system, month-end close procedures for IBS and non-IBS subledgers, and IBS email inbox management.
  • Perform Ad-Hoc reports as needed to support the VP of Finance & Accounting, the Accounting Manager, Finance & Accounting Analyst 3, and departments.  Analyze and identify current accounting processes, recommending ways to continuously improve function performance utilizing business productivity software. Maintains a high level of knowledge in specific tools such as Microsoft Excel, Business Axiom, Cognos, and Polaris/Orbit. Uses knowledge to design spreadsheets, reports, and queries to enhance data collection efficiency and office reporting and analysis capabilities.
  • Work directly to support Reimbursement team in Hospital Effort Certification (HEC) compilation of data from departments.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field from an accredited college or university. AND Minimum of 2 years of progressively responsible relevant work experience. OR
  • Bachelor’s degree with 36-quarter hours of accounting courses from an accredited college or university, plus 2 years of professional accounting experience.
  • Healthcare financial experience.

Skills and Abilities

  • Experience with federal and governmental agency healthcare surveys required.

  • Experience with annual financial audits.

  • Has a strong understanding of profit and loss activity, balance sheet accounts, cash flow statements.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and to exercise sound judgment.
  • Ability to be detailed-oriented including accuracy with numbers and data entry.
  • Ability to track a large number of different tasks through various stages of development and implementation.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy in order to maintain effective working relationships within the department, as well as with hospital department staff, directors, administrators, and the general public.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-based environment.
  • Proficiency with PC-based software in a Windows platform, including word processing, spreadsheet, database, graphics, and e-mail.
