About the role

GENERAL DESCRIPTION


The Airport Maintenance Specialist I/II performs skilled and semi-skilled maintenance work to ensure the safe, secure, and efficient operation of airport facilities in compliance with Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) Part 139, 14 CFR Part 1542 (Transportation Security Regulations), and all other applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and airport standards. This position supports the continuous operational readiness of the airfield and landside facilities by inspecting, maintaining, repairing, and documenting critical infrastructure systems. Considered “essential personnel” in the event of City Offices closure and reports to work as assigned by the Department Director or their designee.


Airport Maintenance Specialist I


The Airport Maintenance Specialist I is an entry-to-intermediate-level position that performs routine assignments under close supervision while developing technical skills and regulatory knowledge.


Airport Maintenance Specialist II


The Airport Maintenance Specialist II is a more experienced role, expected to perform complex maintenance tasks independently, troubleshoot system issues, assist with training, and provide technical guidance as needed.


SUPERVISION EXERCISED


Airport Maintenance Specialist I exercises no supervision.


Airport Maintenance Specialist II may exercise technical and functional supervision over Airport Maintenance Specialist I.


IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES


Inspection, maintenance, and repair of airfield lighting systems, airfield signage, and associated electrical components to ensure operational compliance and safety.


Pavement maintenance activities, including inspection, reporting, preventive maintenance, crack sealing, patching, painting markings, and coordination of airfield pavement repairs.


Maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of perimeter security systems, access control systems, gates, fencing, and internal security infrastructure in accordance with CFR Part 1542 requirements.


Maintenance and repair of parking control systems, revenue control equipment, and associated infrastructure.


General building and grounds maintenance, including minor plumbing, minor carpentry, minor electrical work, minor HVAC troubleshooting, filter changes and support, and painting.


Operation, inspection, and maintenance of airport vehicles and equipment, including preventive maintenance and minor mechanical repairs.


Vegetation control and airfield grounds upkeep to maintain safety, compliance, and appearance.


Participation in wildlife hazard management activities as required.


Snow and ice control operations, emergency response, and irregular operations support as needed.


Accurate recordkeeping, reporting, and documentation to demonstrate compliance with regulatory requirements and airport policies.


This position requires the ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, operate specialized equipment, respond to after-hours call-outs, and maintain required security clearances and certifications. Must demonstrate a strong commitment to safety, regulatory compliance, and customer service in a dynamic airport environment.


This position is classified as an Essential Worker for the City of Abilene and shall be required and must be able to report for duty in extreme weather or other conditions/situations when City offices are closed or Non-Essential Workers are told to not report for duty.


Operate a City vehicle or personal vehicle to visit other work locations, attend meetings, and events.


Effectively communicate with Air Traffic Control personnel via VHF radios and safely operate equipment around aircraft in accordance with FAA regulations.

Airport Maintenance Specialist I:


Knowledge of:


Airfield lighting systems (runway/taxiway lights, signs, REILs, etc.).


Electrical circuits, wiring, and troubleshooting methods.


Hand and power tools used in electrical and mechanical maintenance.


Understanding of pavement maintenance practices (crack sealing, patching, asphalt/concrete repair).


Pavement condition reporting and foreign object debris (FOD) prevention.


Groundskeeping principles, including vegetation control and fence repair.


Perimeter fencing systems.


Gate operators and access control systems.


Minor Plumbing repair (fixtures, valves, minor pipe repair).


Minor Carpentry (doors, hardware, framing, min
