Job Description:
The Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences seeks a highly motivated veterinary research associate to contribute to innovative research in zoological and wildlife medicine. This position will support ongoing and emerging research programs focused on advancing clinical, translational, and population-level health in non-domestic species. This position is temporary (2 Year Post-Doc) and will allow the individual to gain skills and experience that will prepare them for their research career in academia or elsewhere. The successful candidate will be expected to lead independent research projects while also contributing to collaborative research initiatives.
Job Responsibilities:
75%-Design, implement, and manage independent research projects in zoological and wildlife medicine. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across institutional and external research programs. Contribute to the development and execution of multi-scholar research initiatives. Analyze and interpret data using appropriate statistical methods. Prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals and present findings at scientific meetings. Assist with grant writing, including proposal development and reporting. Mentor undergraduate, veterinary, and graduate students as appropriate. Ensure compliance with institutional animal care, biosafety, and research regulations.
20%-Assist with providing clinical care for wildlife patients presenting to the Wildlife Hospital of Louisiana, including physical examinations, diagnostics, treatment, anesthesia, surgery, and rehabilitation. Participate in emergency response and triage of injured, orphaned, or ill wildlife species. Participate in teaching and mentoring veterinary students and externs. Ensure compliance with hospital and state veterinary regulations, animal welfare regulations, biosafety protocols, and relevant permitting requirements. Review medical records for accuracy and compliance with regulatory and institutional standards. Work effectively in a team environment while managing cases and responsibilities.
5%-Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:DVM and related coursework in Zoological and Wildlife Medicine
Preferred Qualifications:Ph.D. and 3 years of applicable experience
Specific Experience: Experience in zoological or wildlife clinical practice or research settings; evidence of scholarly productivity (peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations); experience with grant writing or participation in funded research; familiarity with methodologies relevant to wildlife and conservation medicine (molecular diagnostics, epidemiology, and advanced imaging); strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
Preferred Certifications/Licenses:A minimum of a PhD and DVM (or equivalent veterinary degree)
