Position Summary
The Space Medicine Innovation Laboratory is seeking a researcher at the MD or PhD level. The researcher will be responsible for leading and conducting innovative clinical and translational research currently focused on:
- Assessing brain function using the brain’s auditory system in people with various conditions (HIV, Alzheimer’s disease, and Long-COVID) – Involves work with neurocognitive assessments, central auditory tests, electrophysiology, and MRI
- Use of hyperbaric oxygen for research and clinical applications – Involves work with hyperbaric chambers and a research registry
- Technology/science projects for NIH, NASA/Department of Defense – areas of interest include motion sickness, space-related bone loss, visual changes in astronauts, cooling of EVA suits.
- Developing new audiological tests for use both in the US and the developing world – Involves work with new audiological testing technologies.
- Testing and developing self-directed, autonomous, interactive-media-based behavioral health tools and virtual reality for use in isolated and confined environments (e.g. Antarctic stations) and other settings – Involves work with VR technology and web-based behavioral health tools
The researcher will develop and manage research programs/experimentation, secure external funding, provide clinical services as appropriate, mentor trainees and junior staff, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across national and international research networks. This role requires cross collaboration with Dartmouth Health and Dartmouth College, travel to research sites, conferences, and collaborating institutions both domestically and internationally.
The ideal candidate will bring a strong sense of curiosity and drive for research across different fields. An ability to work across research disciplines is welcome. The position will be considered for those interested in either part-time or full-time effort and is on-site at our Lebanon, NH. campus.
Key Accountabilities
Research (55%):
- Design, lead, and implement clinical, translational, and/or research studies in auditory neuroscience, Alzheimer’s, HIV, hyperbaric studies, and more.
- Develop innovative research protocols aligned with laboratory, organizational priorities, and emerging scientific opportunities.
- Ensure research activities comply with ethical, regulatory, and institutional requirements.
- In collaboration with research assistants and undergraduates in lab, recruit and test individuals
- Design, develop, and complete or lead experiments/projects.
- Provide specialized clinical services related to hyperbaric, hearing, balance, auditory disorders, and other areas of interest that align with Institutional and Laboratory goals.
- Integrate clinical observations and patient outcomes into research initiatives.
- Support evidence-based clinical practice through the application and translation of research findings.
- Interact with national and international collaborators to advance projects
- Manage human and animal use approvals
- Train new personnel
Grant and Publication Support (20%)
- Identify funding opportunities from government agencies, foundations, industry partners, and other funding bodies.
- Lead the preparation, submission, and management of competitive grant applications.
- Develop research budgets and ensure responsible stewardship of awarded funds.
- Prepare and submit abstracts and papers for projects
- Provide support for the PI in the preparation of grant proposals, reports, and publications
- Meet organizational expectations for external funding acquisition and research sustainability.
- Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with internal and external researchers, clinicians, and stakeholders.
- Disseminate research findings through peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, and professional forums.
