The Arthrex Manufacturing site in Pendleton, SC is responsible for the manufacturing of a variety of Arthrex products and employs Manufacturing & Quality Engineers. The individual chosen for this position will engage with engineers of different product portfolios to create and optimize manufacturing processes, perform verification and validation activities, develop and implement process improvements using value stream mapping and project developmental skills, and analyze results from data collection systems to better understand the performance of the processes. Intern/Co-ops will engage with process engineering teams responsible for machining, finishing, textile processing, assembly and more. Preferably, the ideal candidate will be pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or another related field. Computer aided modeling experience and effective oral & written technical communication skills are strongly preferred.
This internship will run from May 2024 – August 2024. The ideal candidate will have the availability to work 30-40 hours per week at our Pendleton, SC facility.
Main Objective:
The main goal of the summer internship for the Operations Engineering Intern role will be to help with the development and enhancement of component manufacturing by leading process improvement projects to better the process flow and efficiencies in the Milling, Grinding, Swiss, and Finishing Departments.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Process Data Sheets Project:
- Lead and coordinate the development of new Process Data Sheets, depicting tool mapping on part families in the Swiss, Milling, and Grinding Departments to help operators with visual representation on products.
- Value Stream Mapping:
- Create a Value Stream map for the areas listed below under the scope of this assignment.
- Define possible improvement points and ideas for improving streamlines of raw material to finished product as material flows in departments.
- Present findings to Process Owners and Operations Management to better guide resources for improvements.
- Line Clearance:
- Create new process designs for Mixed Lot Prevention with Engineering. Implement and coordinate documentation updates for new process designs to uphold quality standards for auditing.
- Coordinate with Operations and operators to discuss changes and their gauge effectiveness.
- Cycle Time Studies:
- Reestablish accurate cycle times in CNC Component Manufacturing.
- Improve CNC Component Manufacturing's Cycle Time Study methods to better standardize updates when process improvements are made to better reflect scheduling changes.
- 5S Standardization:
- Help with the standardization of 5S scorecards in the CNC Component Manufacturing Departments.
- Create and improve Shadow board designs with the help of Maintenance and Engineering.
- Lead process improvement projects to better standards for 5S.
- This is an in-office position located in Pendleton, SC; it is not a remote position.
Education and Experience:
Progress towards a college degree in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering required. (Students who have recently graduated are only eligible to work as an intern/co-op up to six months from their graduation date.)
Knowledge and Skill Requirements/Specialized Courses and/or Training:
- Intermediate Solidworks Skills required
- Advanced Microsoft Skills (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlool, etc.) required.

Machine, Tools, and/or Equipment Skills:
PC; Familiarity with Microsoft Outlook; PowerPoint; Word and Excel. Fax; Scanner.
