The Cornell Bowers CIS Student Services Team
The Cornell Bowers CIS Student Services team is dedicated to supporting the college’s undergraduate educational mission through academic advising, programming, and other initiatives that prioritize student experience, success, belonging, and well-being.
The Opportunity
Cornell Bowers CIS seeks a highly organized, data-savvy problem solver with a positive customer-service mindset to take on the role of Student Employment Coordinator. Reporting to the Director of Student Services, the Student Employment Coordinator plays a pivotal role in fulfilling the college’s academic mission. With just 4% of the university’s faculty tasked with teaching 20% of its students, Cornell Bowers CIS relies heavily on undergraduate course staff to support faculty instruction. The Student Employment Coordinator’s role as project manager for the recruitment, hiring, and onboarding of these students directly affects the education of thousands of Cornell students each year. Additionally, the coordinator’s oversight of course staff payroll, record-keeping, and reporting, and their work on financial controls, affects the college’s financial health and planning.
Key Responsibilities
Compliance:
- Serve as an internal, college-wide student employment subject-matter expert, ensuring compliance.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and university student employment policies.
- Advise faculty and staff on employment policies and practices.
- Stay updated on employment practices and policy developments, identifying areas of risk and/or recommending changes as necessary.
- Annually review and recommend changes to student employment compensation in alignment with NYS minimum wage and university guidelines.
Build and Nurture Campus Partnerships:
- Collaborate with the Cornell Office of Student Employment and Financial Aid, Cornell Workday Team, and HR units.
- Partner with Cornell’s Workday Team on projects related to student hiring and federal work study compliance.
Student Employment:
- Lead the recruitment, hiring, and onboarding of over 1,400 undergraduate course staff annually: set and communicate timelines, promote positions and source applications, maintain hiring website and online dashboard, and ensure targets and deadlines are met.
- Onboard and manage payroll for undergraduate research hires.
- Oversee payroll (including timecard approval) and implement financial controls for all undergraduate course staff and undergraduate research hires.
- Partner with the Bowers CIS Sponsored Research Center to process REU supplement awards.
- Manage the Student Employment Exchange Group Account (EGA), responding to email inquiries from diverse stakeholders.
Record Keeping, Reporting, and Data Analysis:
- Maintain detailed student employment records.
- Compile and analyze data and prepare statistical reports and trend analyses for department leadership and finance team.
Other Responsibilities:
- Participate in student services team strategic planning, events, and special projects.
- Perform other administrative duties as assigned.
