About the role - Sr. Specialist SHES, Logistics and Transportation

Location can be in:  Winnemucca, NV, Alvin, TX, Centennial, CO, or Cadillac, Quebec, Canada

 

We are excited to announce an opportunity with Orica for a Senior Specialist - SHES (Safety, Health, Environment, Security), within our Orica Specialty Mining Chemicals team.

 

Responsible for overseeing and maintaining safety standards across all aspects of the company's supply chain, from raw material sourcing to product delivery, by implementing safety policies, conducting risk assessments, investigating incidents, and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations, with the goal of preventing accidents and promoting a strong safety culture throughout the logistics network.

What you will be doing

Aligns all behaviours with Orica’s Charter Values, Purpose and Strategy.

 

Safety Policy Development and Implementation:

  • Develop and maintain comprehensive Transport Management Plan, aligned with industry standards and legal requirements
  • Ensure safety policies are communicated effectively to all levels of the supply chain, including vendors, transporters, and warehouse personnel

 

Risk Assessment and Mitigation:

  • Conduct regular risk assessments across the supply chain to identify potential hazards in warehousing, transportation, and material handling operations
  • Implement preventive measures to mitigate identified risks and prioritize safety improvements

 

Incident Investigation and Reporting:

  • Investigate all safety incidents thoroughly, including near misses, to determine root causes and implement corrective action plans
  • Maintain detailed documentation of incidents, investigations, and corrective actions

 

Compliance Management:

  • Monitor adherence to all relevant safety regulations (DOT, Transport Canada, etc.) throughout the supply chain
  • Conduct regular safety audits and inspections at warehouses, transportation hubs, and supplier facilities

 

Training and Awareness:

  • Develop and deliver safety training programs for all supply chain personnel, on topics like hazard identification and emergency procedures – including Major Hazard Management (MHM)
  • Conduct ongoing safety awareness campaigns to reinforce safety culture

 

Continuous Improvement: 

  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance safety performance and foster a culture of safety within the logistics team

 

Emergency Response: 

  • Develop and implement emergency response plans for logistics operations and conduct regular drills to ensure readiness.

 

Collaboration with Stakeholders:

  • Work closely with other departments within the organization, including operations, quality control, and procurement, to integrate safety considerations into all supply chain activities
  • Collaborate with vendors and third-party logistics providers to ensure their safety practices align with company standards

 

Performance Monitoring and Reporting:

  • Track key safety metrics such as incident rates, near misses, and compliance levels to identify trends and areas for improvement 
  • Generate regular safety reports for management, highlighting performance and areas needing attention

What you will bring

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, Logistics, Engineering, or a related field 
  • Experience: Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in a safety management role within the logistics or manufacturing industry
  • Knowledge: Strong understanding of logistics operations, safety regulations, and risk management principles. Familiarity with ISO 45001 or similar safety management systems preferred
  • Skills: Excellent attention to detail, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and proficiency
