The Principal Engineer - I&C (Instrumentation & Controls) Systems works within the Services I&C Engineering team of the GE Vernova Hitachi (GVH) Engineering organization. The I&C Systems team is responsible for designing and implementing I&C systems for Nuclear Power Plants. The I&C Systems team have strong interfaces with electronic hardware, software, and plant I&C system operations. This role requires technical problem solving, system architecture development/implementation skills and effective communication/collaboration with other teams within the GVH business functions to deliver on key I&C customer initiatives.Job Description

The I&C Systems team is responsible for designing and implementing I&C systems for Nuclear Power Plants. The I&C Systems team have strong interfaces with electronic hardware, software, and plant I&C system operations. This role requires technical problem solving, system architecture development/implementation skills and effective communication/collaboration with other teams within the GVH business functions to deliver on key I&C customer initiatives.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Recognized technical expert in safety related digital instrumentation & control (I&C) embedded systems, design, architecture, hardware, and software integrated solutions using modern and legacy technology.
- Remains cognizant of general knowledge of relevant nuclear regulatory guidance and associated endorsed industry standards, inclusive of IEEE (e.g., IEEE 603, IEEE 7-4.3.2, IEEE 1012), IEC (e.g., IEC 61513, IEC 60880, IEC 62566), ASME NQA-1 and other standards.
- Provide technical consultation on various next generation I&C technology development programs throughout the business.
- Works closely with the Chief Consulting Engineer’s office and related consulting engineers across engineering for I&C systems applications.
- Lead and provide the key technical direction to large projects with critical business impact.
- Maintain an active role in developing and defining the state-of-the-art I&C system technology for new product introduction, BWR fleet I&C system upgrades, cost improvements and problem resolution to meet current and future business needs.
- Works closely with Services I&C business Product Line Leaders (PLLs) to prepare technical proposal content for GVH I&C solutions and provide technical consultation during the Inquiry to Order (ITO) commercial process, including directly communicating with external customers.
- Support other GVH businesses, internal & external customers, and suppliers as required.
- Provide technical consultation to cross-functional teams throughout the business to improve or resolve design, process, product center, supplier, or field issues.
- Effectively communicate and provide recommendations through the analysis, preparation, and presentation of technical data to internal and external GVH customers.
- Provide technical guidance, direction and training to new and experienced systems engineers, specialists, technicians, and co-ops.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Discipline (Computer Programming, Electrical or similar).
- Minimum 8 years as a recognized practitioner and subject matter expert (SME) in digital I&C system engineering design and implementation.
Eligibility Requirements
Willingness to travel 1 week/month to Wilmington, NC (Relocation to Wilmington, NC preferred).
Desired Characteristics
- Operating at a senior level within an organization.
- Excellent writing and verbal communications skills.
- Master’s degree or PhD in an engineering or technical discipline.
- Experience in the nuclear industry or other I&C focused highly regulated industry (e.g., Aerospace).
- Considered an expert in nuclear safety related digital I&C systems.
- Familiar with the GVH NUMAC product line design, functions, and applications in rod control, neutron monitoring, and reactor protection.
- Knowledge of quality standards and systems (e.g., NQA-1 and ISO 9000).
- Problem solving skills; Lean training/experience is preferred.
- Strong organization skills.
- Willing and able to travel to plant sites and interface directly with external customers.
