About Perelman Performing Arts Center (PAC NYC)

Following 9/11, the community and civic planning process that resulted in the World Trade Center master plan in 2003 envisioned a new performing arts center as one of the anchors of the site. The Perelman Performing Arts Center (PAC NYC) opened in the Fall of 2023 realizing that plan and becoming the new home for emergent and established artists in theater, dance, music, opera, and multi-disciplinary performance from New York and the world in downtown Manhattan.

The Role

PAC NYC is seeking a contract Associate Technical Director (“ATD”) who will begin in the Summer of 2024 to assist the Technical Director in PAC NYC’s inaugural year of programming. Reporting to the Technical Director (“TD”), the ATD will assist the TD in ensuring that all productions are presented seamlessly and of the highest quality. The ATD works with TD in collaborating with creative teams to help them understand the uniquely flexible spaces of PAC NYC, and in the planning for and execution of the technical design of each stage production.

The ATD must demonstrate a personal passion for, as well as a track record of advancing inclusive, anti-racist goals in their career. The ATD must be a strategic and innovative thinker as well as a creative problem solver.

Your key responsibilities:

  • Assist the Technical Director with planning and executing the technical design of each stage production at PAC NYC.
  • Support the creation of technical drawings of a new performing arts center, generate detailed 3D models in AutoCAD, and produce construction and load in drawings as required.
  • Work with the TD and crew to compare building drawings to actual architecture and create accurate "as-builts" for future productions.
  • Along with the TD, source and purchase necessary materials, hardware, tools, etc, and track both inventory and expenses for production budgets.
  • Collaborate with the production department and other stakeholders to develop and improve both storage and inventory management solutions.
  • Work with the TD in the development and documentation of standard working practices and safety protocol.
  • Working with TD, and in collaboration with other production leads, develop rigging plots and provide specifications on rigging methods for PAC NYC shows.
  • Attend rehearsals, design meetings, and production meetings as needed in conjunction with the Technical Director.
  • Serve as the Technical Director for smaller productions and events or rentals, as needed.
  • Assist TD in tracking and scheduling service for stage equipment such as Genies, Motors, and Automation.
  • As assigned, work with third parties renting PAC NYC, including their designated production teams and other staff as appropriate, to ensure that rental events are well supported and successful.
  • Foster a work environment that is safe, respectful, supportive and that embodies the values of equity and inclusion.
  • Adhere to and enforce safe working practices and follow all PAC NYC polices. Stay informed of health and safety issues regarding materials, equipment, and working environment.

What it takes to be successful in the role:

  • 3+ years of professional experience in a performing arts organization in a leadership, technical direction, or technical design role, experience in a similar position in another industry or equivalent experience through education.
  • Expertise with various software programs including AutoCAD (both 2D and 3D drafting), Vectorworks, MS Office Suite, Dropbox, Slack, Zoom.
  • Strong writing and oral communication skills, with experience working with a diverse group of internal and external constituencies.
  • In-depth, hands-on experience and knowledge of modern stage technology and procedures including rigging, and stage automation systems. ETCP certification is preferred.
  • A commitment to anti-racism, inclusion, equity, and accessibility.
  • Ability to create scenic drafting, stage plans, and related technical documents.
  • Working knowledge of sound, recording, video, lighting, video streaming and broadcasting standards and equipment.
