The Director of Development (DoD), University Initiatives, leads fundraising efforts on behalf of various programs across UNH that are deemed strategic priorities with strong funding opportunities and a demonstrated positive return on investment. The assigned areas could be adjusted as dictated by Advancement leadership but may include schools and institutes (such as the School of Marine Science and Ocean Engineering, the Earth, Oceans, and Space Institute, and the Graduate School) and other interdisciplinary and university-wide initiatives (such as Business and Economic Engagement and Research and Innovation). The incumbent will manage a portfolio of prospects capable of making philanthropic contributions to support the priorities of these assigned areas, as well as identify and qualify new prospects. The incumbent will also strategically plan and coordinate fundraising efforts that engage all potential constituencies (alumni, parents/families, friends, faculty, staff, corporations, etc.) in making charitable gifts via various channels to strengthen the base of supporters. Collectively, the frontline fundraising work and driving the other elements of the fundraising programs will heighten the level of engagement with donors, prospects, and board members, and ultimately increase the fundraising achievement for these areas. To be successful in this role, the DoD must work closely with dynamic leadership and other key stakeholders (primarily the Dean or Director of each area), while also collaborating with colleagues and leadership across the Development and University Advancement teams.

Duties/Responsibilities

Front-Line Fundraising (70%)

  • Manage and actively expand a robust portfolio of prospects, maintaining frequent contact with these individuals and organizations to build relationships that will increase philanthropic support.

  • Conduct upwards of 100-125 personal visits with prospects and donors each fiscal year; meeting this activity goal will require travel across the state, region, and, on occasion, the U.S. These visits should be planned strategically and leverage deans/directors of assigned areas, and other leadership when appropriate.

  • Craft systematic and effective solicitation strategies and funding proposals for leadership, major, principal, and planned gift prospects that align with both the donors’ intentions and dean/directors’ fundraising priorities. This will require collaboration with key partners across University Advancement and other Development team members.

  • Qualify and disqualify prospects by conducting a series of steps that deem their affinity and inclination to engage philanthropically at any given level. And facilitate pipeline movement across the Development spectrum when prospects should be transitioned to another portfolio.

  • Solicit gifts of all levels for assigned areas, with a focus on major gifts, from assigned prospects but also by reaching out to other donors or potential donors to achieve annual revenue goals.

  • Steward prospects and donors through their philanthropic journey with assigned areas/UNH, with the goal of maximizing their donor potential.

  • Assist the entire Development team with achieving alumni participation goals, for the university overall and for assigned areas specifically. This will require engagement in key campaigns such as the annual (603) Challenge and year-end pushes.

  • Utilize CRM database, reports, and other available technologies to efficiently manage, engage and expand prospect portfolio.

Fundraising Program Planning & Coordination (30%)

  • Work closely with the Managing Director of Development to strategize key prospects/ projects and to develop/implement a comprehensive multi-year fundraising plan for assigned areas that will significantly increase results each fiscal year and throughout the campaign.

  • Involve the deans/directors of assigned areas in key solicitations and initiatives and ensure all fundraising activities align with the deans/directors’ vision/priorities and with UNH’s overall case for support and strategic plans.

  • Oversee preparation of reports, proposals, brochures, and other materials for various internal and external stakeholders.

  • Recruit and manage volunteers around various fundraising efforts and provide guidance as needed; this will include advisory boards and fundraising committees.

  • Assist in the annual process of setting goals
