POSITION SUMMARY:
This is a management level security position which reports to the Director of Corrections and serves as third in command in the Howard County Department of Corrections. Assists the Director and Deputy Director in directing the daily operational activities of the Detention Center and Central Booking Facility.
STARTING SALARY HIRING RANGE:
$45.68 - $59.81/hourly
$95,019 - $124,409/annually
CLASS DESCRIPTION:
Performs management level corrections operations work under executive level direction. Work includes overseeing the custody and security of inmates at the Detention Center, interpreting and implementing policies and procedures; program planning and development; and participating in the budgetary process. Work also includes supervising inmate classification and coordination with Court systems.
*This position is Executive Exempt, meaning it is a part of the Exempt Service of the Howard County Merit System. Executive Exempt positions do not have a probationary period, as they are appointed and serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority, the Director of Corrections. This position does not receive merit protections received by the Classified Service.*
*This position has been designated as "essential personnel," meaning an employee is expected to report for regular work shifts during inclement weather, emergency situations, County holidays and on an on-call basis. This role is subject to be on call 24 hours a day.*
*Due to the nature of the primary duties, this position requires in-person presence at the worksite.*
Examples of duties
Leadership & Management:
- Serves as Acting Director in the absence of the Deputy Director/Director.
- Responsible for overall direction, coordination, and ongoing evaluation of staff security, training, discipline, and scheduling functions.
- Manages non-supervisory personnel as well as subordinate supervisors overseeing Correctional Officers.
- Performs personnel management in accordance with organizational policies and applicable laws, including interviewing, hiring, training, planning, assigning and directing work, evaluating performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, and resolving complaints and personnel issues.
