Position Summary
The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences is inviting applications for Health Programs (HP) faculty positions in Veterinary Anesthesiology. As we are expanding our anesthesia program to support growth across all clinical services, we seek a candidate to join our collegial team who is committed to excellent patient care, enthusiastic about educating veterinary students, house officers, and technicians, and interested in performing scholarly activities to improve the practice of veterinary medicine. Clinical responsibility will be shared with the other anesthesia faculty and includes providing anesthesia for small animals, equine, and food animal services. Clinical duties will include weekend, holiday, and after-hours consulting that is shared amongst all anesthesia faculty, although the majority of backup on-call duties are provided via phone.
The duties of the successful applicant include participation in the teaching and service missions of the College of Veterinary Medicine. Applicants should have experience and aptitude in delivering excellent anesthesia care to companion animals. The position involves extensive instruction of veterinary students in a teaching-hospital setting, supervision of veterinary and nursing students, and training of veterinary interns and residents. The appointment rank and percent effort for is negotiable and determined by the candidate’s qualifications, expertise, and special interests. Teaching expectations would include clinical instruction of veterinary students on their anesthesia rotation and pre-clinical instruction in didactic and laboratory coursework. Faculty have access to many resources to foster their scholarly and pedagogical endeavors and support their successful development as an academic clinician.
The anesthesia section currently has 3 faculty with ACVAA diplomat status, 1 resident, 1 intern, and 14 highly skilled and experienced licensed veterinary nurses (including 2 credentialed in anesthesia and analgesia), and a veterinary assistant. Department faculty also include specialists in surgery, internal medicine, emergency and critical care medicine, cardiology, neurology, dermatology, ophthalmology, oncology, sports medicine, rehabilitation, and theriogenology. MSU’s veterinary medical center just completed a large renovation project which included the anesthesia department. We are in the process of procuring a new 3T MRI with an enhanced research package. The anesthesia section has both Mallard and Tafonius large animal ventilators, IRadimed MRI monitor, SonoSite X-Porte ultrasound, Mindray anesthesia monitors, Stimpod nerve stimulator, and much more.
Minimum qualifications include a D.V.M. degree (or equivalent) from an AVMA accredited veterinary school and a valid license to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Michigan. Preference will be given to candidates with board-certification with the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia (ACVAA) or European College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia (ECVAA), additional years of clinical anesthesia experience, experience teaching professional veterinary students, training house officers, a record of scholarship, and/or a unique clinical interest that would enhance the work and mission of the anesthesia section and MSUCVM.
