Job Description:

Parsons is looking for an amazingly talented Senior Bacterial Core Lab Technician to provide research support administration services for our government customer in Frederick, MD. In this role you will get to manage BSL-3 laboratory operations and conduct various animal studies to support research on bacterial pathogens and potential therapeutic compounds.

Regular hours of work with the possibility of Weekends or extra weekly hours if needed.

What You'll Be Doing:

  • Responsible for BSL-3 laboratory operations and training in animal manipulations, performing approximately 5 animal studies in both DTRA funded projects and contracted work.
  • Perform in vitro Minimum Inhibition Concentration (MIC) testing of potential therapeutic compounds against Tier 1 bacteria, testing over 72 compounds per year against 30-strain diversity sets.
  • Participate in small animal studies, including preparation and administration of antibiotics and vaccines, and collection of animal body fluids and tissues.
  • Conduct animal health exams to ensure compliance with IACUC approved protocols.
  • Participate in weekly lab meetings, assist in development and design of in vitro and in vivo work, and present posters at scientific conferences.
  • Support BSL-2 pharmacokinetics and toxicology studies, including drug and vaccine administration and collection of blood and tissues for analysis.
  • Contribute to the in vivo pharmacology research program, determining pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics relationships and efficacy of optimized leads.
  • Assist with data analyses and drafting reports for internal or external customers.
  • Work with mass spectrometry, chromatography, HPLC MS/MS, and other biophysical techniques to support in-process testing and characterization of biopharmaceutical products.
  • Perform bioanalytical data acquisition, analysis, and reporting using Applied Biosystems Analyst, Excel, and Mass Spec Quantitation Software MultiQuant.
  • Complete approximately 25 media/reagent preparations per year.
  • Assist with approximately 5 animal challenges and 10 bacterial challenge preparations per year.
  • Perform approximately 400 animal injections and 400 animal observations per year.
  • Support in vivo projects by completing approximately 500 bacterial burdens in animal tissue per year.
  • Perform approximately 500 small animal necropsies per year.
  • Process approximately 300 animal gavage and 125 animal blood collections per year.
  • Place approximately 50 GFEBs orders per year for supplies and equipment.
  • Maintain laboratories in BSL-2 and BSL-3.
  • Perform or assist with BSAT Inventory Management weekly.
  • Conduct or assist with Equipment Inventory Management twice a year in BSL-2 and BSL-3.
  • Perform or assist with monthly Laboratory Management, including safety functions and chemical inventory.
  • Review relevant literature monthly and assist in preparing standard operating procedures and manuscripts.
  • Present research findings at one scientific conference per year, requiring CONUS or OCONUS travel.
  • Maintain a GLP training folder and comply with all GLP regulations when applicable.
  • Contribute to the design and oversight of 10 small animal studies, including drafting study plans and scheduling personnel.
  • Contribute to study progress reports and scientific manuscripts, including statistical analysis, data compilation, figure preparation, and methods summary.
  • Assist in establishing new material transfer agreements and cooperative research and development agreements with pharmaceutical companies and universities.
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

What Required Skills You'll Bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Microbiology, or a similar science field with 5 years of relevant laboratory experience.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years performing BSL-3 laboratory operations and training in animal manipulations, including conducting animal studies.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years performing in vitro MIC testing of potential therapeutic compounds against Tier 1 bacteria.
  • Willingness to work with diversity sets of Bacillus anthracis, Yersinia pestis, Francisella tularensis, Burkholderia mallei, and Burkholderia pseudomallei.
