Job Summary

A postdoctoral fellowship position is available in the lab of Dr. Steve Blum at the Massachusetts General Hospital Krantz Family Center for Cancer Research and Harvard Medical School. The Blum Lab develops safer and more effective cancer immunotherapies by integrating primary human samples, systems immunology, and disease-relevant models to uncover mechanisms of treatment toxicity and resistance. The lab’s long-term goal is to inspire new therapeutic strategies and improve clinical care by maximizing anti-tumor immunity while minimizing harm. Current efforts focus on two major challenges:

1. Peritoneal metastases and malignant ascites - The lab seeks to better understand the biology of this immunosuppressive microenvironment and identify novel therapeutic opportunities.
2. Immune-related adverse events (irAEs) - The lab seeks to understand the drivers of the potentially dangerous complications caused by immune checkpoint inhibitors and their relationship to anti-tumor responses to identify better models, therapeutic strategies, and biomarkers.

The lab is seeking highly motivated, organized applicants with a PhD, MD/PhD, or MD and strong research training in immunology, cancer biology, or related fields. This position is for a researcher interested in pursuing predominantly wet-lab research. Comfort with quantitative data analysis (R/Python) is a plus, and computational mentorship/collaboration is available.

The Blum Lab values teamwork, scientific rigor, and curiosity, and it is committed to providing a supportive training environment. The lab is located in a state-of-the-art research building on the main MGH campus in Boston, MA, surrounded by world-class investigators across multiple disciplines. The lab is affiliated with the MGH Department of Medicine, the MGH Cancer Center, Harvard Medical School, and the Broad Institute of MIT & Harvard, providing access to cutting-edge technologies and opportunities for collaboration across Boston’s vibrant biomedical community.

Key Responsibilities
- Lead and execute wet-lab experiments using patient-derived samples and relevant model systems
- Analyze and interpret results in conjunction with computational and clinical collaborators
- Prepare figures, present findings, drive manuscripts, and craft fellowship/grant applications
- Contribute to a rigorous, collaborative lab culture through teamwork and discussion
- Mentor junior trainees as appropriate
