Summary

The Underground Damage Prevention Technician role is responsible for accurately identifying and marking underground facilities including electric, water, communications, and gas to ensure safety and regulatory compliance. The role also involves accurately documenting ticket information and providing detailed responses to internal and external excavators to prevent delays in excavation activities throughout SRP’s service territory.  This role requires a keen eye for detail, strong problem-solving skills, a commitment to working and driving safely, and the ability to work independently and safely in diverse outdoor environments including heavily congested construction sites.

What You'll Do

• Uses specialized electronic equipment to detect and mark underground utilities such as electrical, gas, water, and telecommunications (fiber). 
• Read and interpret utility maps and geographic information system (GIS) to identify type and location of overhead and underground facilities.
• Receive, document, and close out excavation notices using electronic ticket management system.
• Maintain detailed records of all locates, including maps, photographs, sketches, and written reports for comprehensive descriptions, as required by the specific situation.
• Adhere to all safety protocols and regulations to prevent damage to underground utilities and ensure the safety of the public and SRP work crews.
• Coordinate and communicate effectively with contractors, other utility representatives, and other stakeholders to provide clear and accurate information regarding utility locations.
• Regularly inspect and maintain all equipment and tools to ensure they are in optimal working condition.
• Identify and resolve issues related to utility locates, such as discrepancies in data sources or unexpected obstacles.
• Respond to emergency excavation notices and provide on-site support to prevent damage to underground utilities.
• Educate contractors, homeowners, and other stakeholders on safe excavation practices and damage prevention protocols.
• Regularly inspect and maintain all equipment and tools to ensure they are in optimal working condition.
