About the role

The Research in Education and Learning (REAL) Lab is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Research Assistant to support ongoing projects related to learning and motivation in educational contexts.  

Research Assistants will contribute to a range of tasks, including data collection, transcription, coding, data processing, and preliminary data analysis. Extensive training will be provided, and the ideal candidate will bring strong organizational skills and attention to detail, excellent communication, collaborative attitude, and a willingness to learn. 

This position will be a primarily remote position, with occasional in-person meetings in Ridley or Bavaro Hall required. The role will take place during the Spring 2026 semester, with the opportunity to continue beyond that term dependent on performance and lab need.  

Responsibilities may include: 

  • Collect data through structured sessions, interviews, or classroom-based observations (in-person or virtual depending on project needs). 

  • Build rapport with participants—including children, families, and educators—while following study protocols. 

  • Transcribe and code data accurately based on project guidelines. 

  • Assist with data entry and data cleaning. 

  • Support literature reviews and help prepare manuscripts or grant materials. 

  • Assist in administrative with attention to detail tasks as assigned 

  • Maintain organized, confidential records using secure data systems. 

  • Attend regular team meetings (virtual and occasional in-person) to collaborate with lab members. 

  • Perform other research-related tasks as assigned. 

Preferred qualifications: 

  • Previous coursework in psychology, education, cognitive science, or related fields. 

  • Experience working with children or in educational settings. 

  • Interest in pursuing research, graduate school, or a related academic/career path. 

No prior research experience is required. 
 

Training will be provided in all lab procedures, data collection techniques, and software tools. 

In addition to the job duties and responsibilities outlined above, this position will participate in a structured internship experience through the Internship Placement Program (IPP). If selected, interns must enroll in either UNST 3910 (1 cr.) or UNST 3920 (1 cr.).   (the courses are offered 9+ times during the spring, offering plenty of options to choose from. 

Through this robust internship experience, students will receive dedicated career support from their supervisor and gain key skills and competencies that align with future job interests.   The FWS Internship will look great on your resume and provide the student with impactful stories to share in interviews.  

Internships are best suited for students in their 2nd – 4th years.

Wage range: $16-$18/hour

  • Currently enrolled UVA undergraduate student (2nd–4th year preferred) 
  • Federal Work Study Eligibility
