About the role

Under the direction of the Operations Coordinator the Shift Supervisor is responsible for assuring the general welfare, security and safety of the residents, staff, and facility at the shelter for mentally ill and medically frail homeless adult persons. This position is responsible for the supervision of residential workers, porters, and security (where applicable).. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Provide coverage for the general welfare and safety of the shelter residents, and staff. 

  • Provide crisis prevention and intervention as needed. 

  • Complete routine resident and facility checks to ensure that residents are not at risk and that the facility is free of potential hazards (leaks, fire, destruction of property, etc.) 

  • Ensure nightly head count is completed (evening shift) and maintain CARES reports as assigned. 

  • Record incidents and resident’s grievances appropriate in log book and on incident report. 

  • Assign work-related projects to residence workers, security, and maintenance as needed. 

  • Inspect all cleaning and service chores assigned to residence workers to ensure completion. 

  • Conduct regular fire drills during day, evening, night and weekend shifts ensuring that all staff and residents follow procedure. 

  • Interact with NYPD, EMS, NYFD, and know when it is appropriate to make emergency calls. 

  • Interview and train residence workers as directed by leadership. 

  • Provide coverage on an emergency basis when needed. 

  • Arrange for coverage for current or following shift when necessary, including residence workers, security, or maintenance. 

  • Other duties as assigned. 

Staff Supervision 

  • Notify Operation Coordinator of adjustments to staff scheduling to accommodate illness, etc. 

  • Supervise residential workers to ensure that they are meeting goals and performing their duties and discuss with Manager 

  • With the approval of the Operations Coordinator, remove residence workers from duty for infractions, and violations of policies 

  • Ensure that all necessary information is communicated to residence workers as policy and procedures change 

  • Assist Operations Coordinator as needed in completing documentation relevant to resident and facility reporting 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:  

Educational Requirements:  

  •  High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma required. 

  • Must have NYS Security Guard License and current 8-hour annual certificate 

  • F80 Fire Guard License 

Experience: 

  • Minimum two years’ experience working in a residential facility, preferably experience working with dual-diagnosed individuals, mental health and substance abuse issues, and some supervisory experience 

  • Must have good interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively both written and oral 

  • Ability to handle and prevent crisis situations with minimal supervision. 

  • Must have some computer skills and be able to formulate incident reports 

  • Ability to work with clientele that have special needs and provide assistance with respect and compassion. 

  • Help to foster and to promote a positive and harmonious atmosphere at the shelter
