Under general supervision, to assist the Recreation Supervisor and Aquatics Program Coordinator in planning, implementing, supervising and promoting programs at County Recreation Department swimming pools; to supervising the work of assigned aquatics staff; to coordinate work with other professional staff; and performs related work as required.
 
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from the Recreation Supervisor.  Persons in this position supervise and provide training to assigned aquatics staff.
 
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This class requires a working knowledge of general operations in planning, coordinating and supervising swimming pool operations and in providing training and coordination of assigned aquatics staff. Incumbents work with some independence while working in close cooperation with other staff.  This class is distinguished from the Recreation Supervisor in that the latter is the full supervisory-level class that has oversight of all recreation department activities, staff, and recreation facilities.

  • Assists in planning, coordinating, and implementing a variety of swimming and water safety programs at assigned pool facility.   Activities may include swimming lessons, water safety instruction, daily recreational swimming and similar season activities and events.
  • Trains, schedules, supervises and evaluates the performance of assigned staff.
  • Prepares pool and pool facilities for various activities and events.
  • Conducts registration for swimming lessons and other activities.
  • Keeps accurate accounting of registration forms and fees collected.
  • Performs duties of lifeguard and/or water safety instructor as necessary.
  • Enforces all rules, regulations and safety requirements governing pool and pool facilities.
  • Secures facilities at appropriate times of the day.
  • Monitors the condition of facilities and equipment before, during and after events to determine maintenance needs to ensure participant and staff safety.  Requests maintenance or report work as needed.
  • Prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports regarding activities, services and related information including accident and incident reports.
  • Performs general custodial work to ensure cleanliness of the facility, pool and grounds.
  • Ensures the safety of the public and staff at all times by inspecting, patrolling, monitoring, and instructing on the safe use of program facilities, equipment, and supplies; maintains a safe, clean, and tidy environment; reports unsafe conditions or illegal activities.
  • Assists with community relations efforts to increase public awareness and support of aquatics programs and opportunities.
  • Collects and tests pool water and samples for proper chemical levels; adds chemicals and/or adjusts dosages as indicated.
  • Receives and responds to inquiries, concerns and complaints in areas of responsibility.
  • Performs general administrative/clerical work as required, including but not limited to preparing reports and correspondence, establishing and maintaining records, copying and filing documents, entering and retrieving computer data, answering the telephone, etc.
  • Attends meetings, training, seminars, etc., as necessary to enhance job knowledge and skills.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge of:
 
  • Applicable Federal, State, and local laws, regulatory codes, ordinances, and procedures relevant to the program area and facilities to which assigned.
  • General methods, materials and practices associated with the use and maintenance of pools and pool facilities including pool cleaning and maintenance procedures and techniques.
  • Basic principles of leadership and supervision; motivational techniques; principles of instruction.
  • Operation and maintenance requirements of assigned vehicles and equipment.
  • Principles, practices, and service delivery needs related to the program area(s) to which assigned such as water-related activities, swimming style and techniques.
