Description
The Clinical Lab Assistant may be responsible for the pre-analytical processing of laboratory specimens. Processing includes the following responsibilities: sorting, verification of specimen labeling, order entry and distribution, and specimen retrieval. The CLA is responsible for procuring and preparing blood specimens by venipuncture and arterial puncture according to departmental standards (proper tube selection with correct additives, patient preparation, puncture site care, and appropriate patient and specimen identification). The CLA is responsible for collecting electrocardiograms in the inpatient and outpatient settings. The CLA utilizes knowledge of laboratory procedures to prioritize workload and utilizes situations such as combative patients and/or patients that are difficult to draw for various medical reasons. The CLA properly collects throat and nasopharyngeal swabs and gives instructions on collecting urine, stool, and sputum cultures. The Clinical Laboratory Assistant (“CLA”) 3 is responsible for all functions of CLA 1 & 2 and must be eligible for the American Medical Technologists (“AMT”) Medical Laboratory Assistant (“CMLA”) or have current CMLA status. The CLA 3 completes duties and responsibilities in specialized areas. The CLA 3 also orients and trains new employees as assigned.
Requirements
A. CLMA certification is preferred, but a high school diploma with related experience and enrolled in the Clinical Laboratory Scientist/Technician program, or equivalent, is approved by the Clinical Laboratory Director and Laboratory Medical Director.
B. Must take the AMT CMLA exam within six months of eligibility and obtain certification within one year
C. Three (3) years of experience in the laboratory or as determined by the Clinical Laboratory Director
D. Ability and willingness to demonstrate and maintain competency as required for job title and the unit/area(s) of assignment.
E. Excellent communication skills, including oral and written comprehension/expression.
F. Computer skills (i.e., print and fax).
G. Ability and willingness to work with patients of all ages and development levels.
H. Ability to manage a chaotic work environment related to various stat and routine testing requests, testing, and/or instrument problems, as well as a constant need to prioritize duties.

J. Learn and operate medical center equipment such as computers, paging systems, telephones, intercoms, fax machines, copiers, and printers.
K. Learn and perform previously unfamiliar tasks and instrument operations as required for the performance of the job of a medical technologist.
