Principal Energy Systems Analyst
Argonne National LaboratoryAbout the role
Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a technically strong energy systems analyst with extensive experience in the area of life cycle assessment (LCA) and technology assessment to quantify energy, environmental, and economic effects of energy supply systems. We will consider candidates with strong, extensive technical background and experiences to assess energy, environmental, and economic effects of conventional and emerging fuel supply chains (e.g., petroleum and natural gas fuels, hydrogen, nuclear and electricity), new feedstocks (e.g., shale oil, waste-based feedstocks), and industrial and transportation end use applications (e.g., hybrid electric vehicles, fuel-cell vehicles and electric vehicles) by conducting LCA of technologies associated with these systems using the Argonne R&D GREET® model. The candidate will also conduct LCA for other sectors such as the electric power sector and the industrial and manufacturing sectors.
This is a full-time staff position with the Systems Assessment Center in the Energy Systems and Infrastructure Analysis Division at Argonne. The Principal Energy Systems Analyst will collect, synthesize, and develop process-level information from model simulations, open literature and government agencies databases to develop high-quality databases for LCA, work with other team members to develop and apply LCA methodologies to address critical analytical issues, provide rigorous and objective results, and communicate results through journal articles, reports, and presentations at conferences, workshops, and project meetings.
The Principal Energy Systems Analyst will collect data from a variety of sources including open literature, governmental agencies, modeling and simulations, and through collaborating with relevant organizations on developing energy use and emissions data associated with the recovery and processing of primary feedstocks, the production of fuels and products, and their downstream end use in transportation applications and other sectors. The Analyst will investigate key LCA issues on advanced fuels and vehicle technologies and conduct analyses and simulations with the collected data to evaluate the energy and emission effects of conventional and new/emerging products and technologies. The Analyst will develop journal articles, reports, and presentations to dissimilate research results and participate in professional conferences and seminars as session chair, organizer, or participant. The Analyst will contribute to annual expansions and updates of the R&D GREET model through working with other researchers in the Systems Assessment Center to incorporate new and updated energy system and technologies into the model. The Analyst will interact with and may lead internal and external peers and regular reporting to various sponsors, and develop partnerships among industries, government agencies, other national laboratories and academia for new research programs. In particular, the Analyst will develop proposals, plans and other documents that lead to funding opportunities, including agency projects, strategic partnership project (SPP) funding, and LDRD support.
The Systems Assessment Center supports diversified sponsors, including DOE, to assess energy, environmental, economic effects associated with energy systems, materials, and technologies to help guide R&D efforts, identify improvement opportunities, and create new approaches for sustainability and economic analysis to address emerging issues related to energy systems and technologies. The Center continues a 30-year history of leadership in the field of LCA and technology assessment. The Principal Energy Systems Analyst will join a dynamic group of researchers including experts in a variety of fields to form a research team with relevant expertise to execute projects and maximize impact and efficiency. The candidate will also have extensive collaborations with experts from Argonne as well as industry and other national laboratories with all core capabilities needed to develop and execute new projects. The Center develops and maintains the R&D Greenhouse Gases, Regulated Emissions, and Energy Use in Technologies (R&D GREET®) model which is widely used by government, industry, and academic stakeholders to provide objective and rigorous assessment of technologies and products (see https://greet.anl.gov/).
