Key Responsibilities

The Deputy Chief Investigator provides leadership and management to the Investigations unit for the Office of the Medical Examiner (OME). This role is responsible for directing investigations' operational, fiscal, and administrative functions to ensure the effective delivery of forensic death investigation services across the state. This position plays a critical role in strategic engagement, acting as a liaison with executive leadership and policymakers while assisting with managing legislative and budgetary requirements. Additionally, the Deputy Chief Investigator champions operational excellence through team mentorship, performance management, and the implementation of results-based accountability measures to support OME’s mission.

Operational Leadership

● Oversee daily operations of Investigations for the Office of the Medical Examiner.
● Ensure safety, security, and compliance protocols are in place for investigations.
● Assist with managing building maintenance and emergency facility needs.
● Assist the Division Director with analyzing monthly data reports for case turnaround time, pathologist workload, investigations workload, and scene response rates.
● Creation and review of standard operating procedures and policies for the Investigations unit.
● Identify opportunities for process improvements and efficiencies.
● Ensure adequate investigation coverage throughout the state of Utah.
● Participate in the office quality assurance program and oversee Investigations QA.

Fiscal and Legislative Involvement

● Direct the office’s budget planning, monitoring, and execution.
● Assist with legislative requests, including appropriation requests and statutory changes.
● Provide insight to fiscal and operational impact assessments to the Division Director for policymakers and department leadership.

Strategic Engagement

● Respond to requests from the Commissioner’s Office.
● Assist the Division Director with investigative matters for executive leadership meetings to represent OME interests.
● Organize and co-lead OME Investigations meetings and conferences.
● Participate in the development and implementation of the Results-Based Accountability (RBA) plan for OME, ensuring performance measures are met.

People and Resource Management

● Provide supervision, mentorship, and performance management for investigations staff.
● Foster a culture of professionalism, accountability, and continuous improvement.
● Ensure adequate training, support, and resources are available for investigators' success.
● Coordinate availability of resources available to staff and leadership during challenging times and high profile events.

Work Schedule:

• Monday-Friday midday hours
• On call services are required as this positions supervises investigators that are staffed 24/7

Qualifications

Minimum or "day-one" qualifications:

• Must be able to pass a criminal background check
• Bachelors Degree in related field.
• ABMDI Diplomat Certification
