Summary

Michigan Technological University College of Business is seeking an Academic Advisor II, who will provide academic and career advising for business students and from other departments pursuing minors in the College.

Responsibilities and Essential Duties

1. Assist students with their course schedules, degree schedules, and the transferring of credits from other universities/colleges.
2. Evaluate previous coursework regarding degree requirements for undergraduate programs.
3. Provide support for recruitment and orientation events and for curriculum binder process.
4. Advise 350+ students in the College of Business baccalaureate programs and provide guidance in all aspects of their programs of study. Assist students from other departments with minors in the assigned programs.
5. Assist students with semester planning and course registration conflicts, including filled sections, waivers, wait lists, etc.
6. Coordinate the COB Blueprint student success program and collaborating with campus services including Career Services, Student Mental Health and Well-being, Waino Wahtera Center for Student Success, writing and learning centers, etc. to assist students in areas such as career advising, study skills and time management.
7. Coordinate the transfer courses from other universities for applicability to the student’s degree requirements.
8. Carefully review degree audits, graduation requirements and previous coursework for student’s major program.
9. Cooperate with the Registrar’s Office in maintaining student records.
10. Participate in Summer and First-Year Orientation and conduct first-year advising meetings.
11. Coordinate Summer Youth programs within the college.
12. Disseminate current academic policies and procedures, including creating and updating flowcharts and other advising materials.
13. Participate in appropriate college and university committees.
14. Meet with prospective students when other representatives are not available.
15. Be available to students by keeping regular office hours.
16. Work schedule but may include limited evening and weekend hours.
17. Participate in university, regional, and state-level recruiting and outreach events.
18. Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in university continuous improvement initiatives.
19. Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures

• Bachelor's degree

Required Experience

• Two years of student-facing work experience in higher education.
• Experience in securing and handling confidential information.
• Experience using personal computers and basic software packages, including word processing and spreadsheet software.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• Two or more years of academic advising in undergraduate higher education.

• Superior interpersonal and written/oral communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to perform essential duties with minimal supervision.
• Excellent individual, small group, and large group presentation skills.
• Demonstrated ability to use judgment when dealing with confidential information.
• Demonstrated ability to take the initiative to solve problems.
• Demonstrated willingness to adopt a flexible work schedule.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff.
• Demonstrated commitment to contribute to a safe work environment.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

• Experience using degree audit reporting software.
• Experience with student recruitment and/or career coaching
• Experience supervising student workers (e.g., tutors).
