GENERAL SUMMARY

Works under the direction and supervision of the Pharmacist on duty, the Pharmacy Supervisor, and the Community Pharmacy Manager. The Pharmacy Technician Level II's primary job function is to prepare and distribute medications. This technician will also be responsible for handling verbal prescription orders via phone in or voicemail, giving or receiving prescription transfers, calling for refill authorizations, and calling for clarification on prescriptions as allowed by the law. Performs quality control, routine maintenance and other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

• High School Diploma or successful completion of an equivalent High School Exam Required

• Completion of a board approved Pharmacy Technician training program or National Certification required

• Achievement of 90% or higher on SOMC's Competency Assessment for Increasing Technician Responsibilities

Licensure:

• Successful completion of National Qualification test required (PTCB or NHA)

• For Ohio: State of Ohio Board of Pharmacy Certified Technician Registration required

• For Kentucky: State of Kentucky Board of Pharmacy Technician Registration Required

Experience:

• Pharmacy Technician training program or certification or prior technician work experience required.

• 1-year experience as certified pharmacy technician within the last 8 years.

• 90 days of experience as a SOMC pharmacy technician, with passing of introductory period with no noted concerns.

JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

The following is a summary of the major job duties of this job. Other duties may be performed, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below. Specific activities may change from time to time. 

1. Profiles physician orders in computer system for pharmacist review.

2. Provides prompt, efficient, and courteous service, answer telephone inquiries; takes messages when necessary or directs inquiry to the appropriate person.

3. Responsible for general cleanliness of work area/department.

4. Ability to recognize narcotic discrepancies and perform audits as necessary.

5. Delivers medications to Meds to Beds patients (in Emergency Room).

6. Enters patient charges/credits into computer profile system.

7. Checks incoming orders of medications and pharmacy supplies against purchase requisitions for accuracy and completeness.

8. Reviews patient medication profile to identify medications available through Patient Assistance.

9. Contacts drug manufacturer for any application forms needed and/or enrolling patients for various programs over the phone/internet.

10. Performs medication reconcilitation by interviewing patients and/or family member to validate home medications.

11. Contacts pharmacies, nursing homes, and the Veteran Affairs for a complete list of home medications.

12. Obtains necessary income documentation from patients for various programs.

13. Completes applications and obtains prescriptions for each manufacturer's applications. May coordinate with physician regarding and substitutions and obtains signed applications/prescriptions.

14. Educates patient on his/her responsibility for re-ordering prescriptions.

15. Communicates with Purchasing Agent regarding stock levels and items needed to assure adequate inventory. Assures stock rotation and placement of items in appropriate storage areas.

16. Transcribing verbal prescription orders via phone call or voicemail for non-controlled medication orders.

17. Sending and receiving prescription transfers for non-controlled medication orders.

18. Calling for clarification on prescription orders if professional judgement isn't warranted.

19. Calling for prescription refill requests if the original order remains unchanged.

20. Performing intermediate inventory management functions such as preparing dead inventory and excess inventory returns.

21. Performs other duties as assigned.
