Principal Mechanical Engineer – Robotic Arm
Atomos SystemsAbout the role
We are seeking a highly motivated Mechanical Engineer with a passion for robotics and human-machine interfaces to join our team. In this role, you will lead the design, development, and testing of a novel robotic arm and its complementary exoskeleton system for teleoperation. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams—electrical engineers, software engineers, control specialists, and product designers—to create a system that meets performance, safety, and reliability standards.
Areas of Contribution
Robotic Arm Design & Analysis
Design mechanical architectures and components (joints, actuators, transmissions) for a robotic arm.
Perform analytical calculations, FEA, and system-level simulations to ensure structural integrity, performance, and reliability.
Select and validate mechanical components such as bearings, gearboxes, and motors.
Exoskeleton Development
Conceptualize and design mechanical structures for a wearable exoskeleton that mirrors or inverts the robotic arm’s movements.
Ensure ergonomic fit, adjustability, and user comfort while maintaining structural integrity.
Integrate sensors, actuators, and control interfaces for human input and feedback.
Prototyping & Testing
Oversee the fabrication of prototypes (in-house or outsourced).
Design and execute experiments to test mechanical performance and safety standards.
Analyze test data, troubleshoot design issues, and refine solutions in iterative design loops.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work with control and software teams to define requirements and integrate hardware/software interfaces seamlessly.
Collaborate with electrical engineers for wiring, sensor placement, and actuator selection.
Support manufacturing and assembly teams by providing clear technical documentation and guidance.
Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or a related field.
Professional Experience:
3+ years of experience in robotics, automation, mechatronics, or related fields.
Demonstrated success in designing and launching complex mechanical assemblies.
Experience with exoskeleton systems or human-in-the-loop robotics is highly desirable.
Technical Skills:
Proficiency in 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, CATIA, or Creo).
Experience with FEA tools (e.g., ANSYS, Abaqus) for structural, thermal, and fatigue analysis.
Familiarity with actuator selection, gearing mechanisms, and sensor integration.
Knowledge of ergonomics and biomechanical principles for wearable devices.
Basic understanding of control system principles for robotic applications.
Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience
