About the role

The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is seeking an experienced Data Science Lead to lead the querying, cleanup, enhancement and discovery of millions of digital documents at scale. This is a unique opportunity for a highly motivated, creative, and talented computer or data scientist to advance understanding of the role of corporate behavior in public health.


As part of a broad and diverse team working on the Opioid Industry Documents Archive (OIDA), this position will lead OIDA’s effort to support users who want to query, retrieve, explore, and visualize OIDA documents. A joint collaboration between Johns Hopkins University (JHU) and University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), OIDA is a digital repository of publicly disclosed documents from recent judgments, settlements, and ongoing lawsuits concerning the opioid crisis. Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead a workstream dedicated to application of data science and computational methods to OIDA documents.
  • Manage replication of OIDA data from UCSF to JHU.
  • Query and analyze OIDA documents to assist team members with data cleanup and quality assurance.
  • Produce tools to help OIDA users query, explore, visualize, and analyze OIDA documents.
  • Ability to work remotely and collaborate with a diverse and geographically distributed team.
  • Ability to work independently, set and maintain priorities, and meet project deadlines.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in related discipline. Typically require PhD.
  • One-year related experience. Require highly specialized advanced knowledge, education and/or training in a specialized field of study to conduct research.
  • Demonstrated ability on significant graduate project or additional doctoral education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Amazon Web Services.
  • Experience with Python.
  • Experience with Jupyter notebooks.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and writing skills.
  • Experience with or knowledge of research methodologies in the social sciences and the humanities.
  • Experience writing code to work with non-numerical data.
  •  Experience working with digital documents.
  • Experience creating documentation.
