The Department of Cellular & Physiological Sciences (CAPS) at The University of British Columbia (UBC) invites applications for a full-time faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Teaching (tenure track).

For more than fifty years, the Department of Cellular & Physiological Sciences has played an active and important role at UBC and in the greater scientific community. The Department operates the Gross Anatomy Laboratory and oversees UBC’s Body Donation Program. Both contribute exceptional and extensive educational opportunities to students in medicine, dentistry, physical and occupation therapy, biomedical engineering and select undergraduate and graduate courses. The department fosters both collaboration amongst faculty, and individual development, in creating and delivering innovative anatomical education to our students.   

Reporting to the Head of the UBC Department of Cellular & Physiological Sciences, the successful candidate will:

• Provide lectures and laboratories in gross anatomy and neuroanatomy to large and small groups of students.

• Facilitate small group, case-based, learning for students in the MD Undergraduate program.

• Act as an advisor to MD students in the Flexible and Enhanced Learning (FLEX) program.

• Co-ordinate and train the gross anatomy laboratory’s teaching assistants.

• Be expected to participate in other teaching activities of the unit (e.g. human physiology).

The appointee will be expected to develop their own approaches to teaching and their own interests in educational scholarship. In addition to their teaching duties and mentorship and training to undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate learners, the appointee will be expected to participate in relevant service activities within the University such as committee work (e.g., Teaching Committee), and the broader academic and professional community. The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate with other programs and departments and be highly engaged in educational leadership activities including periodic curriculum review, development and innovation, and other teaching and learning initiatives. They will work collaboratively in diverse groups to bring forward strategic initiatives for the Department and the Faculty. The successful candidate will contribute to fostering an environment that promotes inclusivity and embodies values of respect, integrity, compassion, collaboration, and equity. Equity, diversity, inclusion, and justice are essential to academic excellence, as well as to fostering an inclusive community for voices that have been historically underrepresented or discouraged.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD degree in a relevant biological discipline and will have evidence of successfully teaching human anatomy in lecture and laboratory settings. The successful candidate will have demonstrated ability and commitment to teaching and promise of educational leadership. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in one or more of the four activities listed above. In addition, the successful candidate will have demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and interact with empathy, understanding and, respect of diverse perspectives. Experience in collaborating and bringing forward projects with diverse groups, including colleagues, students, and/or stakeholders, is valued.

The expected salary range for this position will be $110,000 - $120,000 per annum.
