Part-Time Technician, Media Studies

The School of Media Studies within the Schools of Public Engagement at The New School seeks a Part-time technician. Under the leadership of the Assistant Director of Technical Operations, the technician will be responsible for supporting the Media equipment and production facilities in SPE. The technician will support the Assistant Director, Media leadership, faculty, staff and students in the implementation and maintenance of technologies impacting pedagogy and curriculum and assist in technology training for faculty and students across all areas within Media. This role is a part-time, 25 hour weekly 1205 paraprofessional union position covered by a collective bargaining agreement between Local 1205 Teamsters and The New School. Work hours The position reports to the Assistant Director of Technical Operations.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Assist faculty and students in the use of equipment and technology, including:

  • Overseeing equipment checkout for both in-house/lab use and off-site special requests.

  • Leading demonstration sessions.

  • Creating and conducting orientations, training, and tours.

  • Overseeing production facilities as assigned.

  • Providing software/application support as needed, requesting and resolving through IT Central.

  • Assisting with technology or physical setup and installation for Media exhibitions, as needed.

  • Creating clear, accurate, user-friendly technical documentation, signage, and instructions for labs and equipment.

• Maintain administrative systems for scheduling, record keeping, inventories, and metrics tracking, under the leadership of the Assistant Director of Technical Operations.

• Work with other staff on the maintenance, installation and continuous operation of a variety of technologies.

• Maintain a safe working environment for students, faculty, and staff.

• Make hardware/software purchase and process improvement recommendations.

• Participate in the onboarding process for new technician staff, through peer to peer training and skills sharing.

• Supervise student workers, including training, tracking accountability, and assigning tasks during shifts.

• Assist with facility improvement projects, shows and installations, and special production facility or departmental initiatives as needed.

• Provide a high level of customer service and professionalism in all interactions with students, faculty, and staff.

• Maintain positive and professional communications with external and internal community members, and strive to continually enhance the service experience.

• Contribute to a diverse, inclusive, and welcoming learning environment with productive and positive workplace relationships.

• Stay current with relevant technology and developments within the field. Obtain and/or maintain current knowledge with required training and/or certifications as related to areas of responsibility and or completion of university required staff training (health/Safety, FERPA etc.).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• A Bachelor’s Degree and 3 years relevant or professional experience within the industry.

• Flexible schedule – ability to work non-traditional schedules that may include nights and weekends, in addition to schedule shifts with semester changes.

• Knowledge of film and video equipment.

• Technical knowledge of film and video cameras, lenses, lighting, audio, and support equipment.

• Full comprehensive experience with film and video production procedures and protocols, set ups, studio and equipment maintenance.

• Understanding of working in a cross-platform (Windows and macOS) environment.

• Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, close attention to detail, and strong organizational and time management abilities.

• Strong ability to assist students working in an interdisciplinary and/or experimental manner from concept to fabrication.
