The Windows Container Core Team is responsible for the Core Operating System (OS) Technology that enables Windows Server Containers. Windows Server Containers are a lightweight and efficient way to run applications in isolated environments, without the need for a full virtual machine. Windows Server Containers provide a consistent and portable platform for developers and Information Technology (IT) professionals to build, deploy, and manage applications across on-premises and cloud environments.
In Core OS, we are responsible for the Operating Systems that power Azure, Microsoft's Linux OS, the platforms for Windows Client and Xbox, and our Windows Server ecosystem – through all of these, we support every one of our cloud businesses and billions of customers around the world. We are looking to hire a Principal Software Engineer Lead who has deep knowledge of Windows internals (including the kernel) and the container space (including familiarity with popular Open Source Software (OSS) tools such as Docker, ContainerD, and the like). Successful candidates will enjoy solving deep technical challenges, have debugging skills, and great cross team collaboration skills. They will be enjoy mentoring and developing their team, and demonstrate customer obsession.

Responsibilities
As a Principal Software Engineer Lead, you will be responisble for the following:
- Lead a team of engineers who work on Windows container technologies.
- Drive the design, implementation, and testing of new features and improvements for Windows containers.
- Collaborate with other teams across Microsoft and the open source community to deliver high quality solutions for customers.
- Provide technical guidance, feedback, and coaching to the team members.
- Manage the team's performance, career development, and growth.
Qualifications
Required/Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR equivalent experience.
- 2+ years of experience with virtualization technologies
- 2+ years of people management experience
Other Requirements
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role.
Microsoft Cloud Background Check:
This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Additional or Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 10+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR equivalent experience.
- 4+ years people management experience.
Software Engineering M5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.
