The Department of Mental Health, Metro Boston Area Office is seeking a highly organized individual to assist the Office Support Specialist in providing support to the Core Services Department, which includes Environmental Services, Compliance, and Safety & Security. The student intern will gain an understanding of human service agencies and resources with added exposure to operations of both inpatient and outpatient mental health services. This is an excellent opportunity for a student interested in public health, safety, and administration to gain experience in a mission-driven environment.

Note: This position is 37.5 hours per week, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Monday – Friday; with Saturday and Sunday off.

Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):                                                                                                             

  •        Assist with project-based tasks related to facility safety, environment of care, and security protocols.
  •        Attend building rounds as needed and take notes for coordination and follow-up of corrective actions based on round findings.
  •        Help maintain and update spreadsheets and departmental databases.
  •        Share responsibility of correspondence with fiscal department and vendors for requests for quotes, preparation of purchase orders, and proof of receipt.
  •        Perform data entry and reporting.
  •        Support office supply inventory and uniform inventory management, including tracking inventory levels, and assisting with ordering and restocking.
  •        Assist with researching and following up on incomplete paperwork and records received.
  •        Attend the area weekly risk meeting as required.
  •        Draft correspondence and inter-departmental communications.
  •        Provide general administrative support to the Office Support Specialist, including correspondence drafting, filing, organizing and digitizing records and other related tasks as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  •        Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook); familiarity with SharePoint a plus.
  •        An understanding of HIPAA and PHI.
  •        Bilingual or multilingual fluency.
  •        Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  •        Strong written communication skills.
  •        Interest in public health, safety, and administration, or related fields preferred; interest or experience in security or behavioral and mental health is an additional asset.

May 27, 2025 through August 29, 2025
