Financial Services is dedicated to continuous improvement for HR, Payroll, and Procure to Pay services. We strive to deliver high quality services and an excellent experience so faculty and staff can focus on teaching and research. We provide Human Resources support for compensation activities, data management, staff recruitment, student employment and time tracking. We provide Payroll support for employee wage and fellowship payments, independent contractor and other reportable payments, payroll corrections, tax calculation and reporting and compliance for payment to non-citizens and entities. In addition, Shared Services provides Procure to Pay support for invoice processing, vendor management, check requests, purchase order compliance and expense reimbursement.


Job Summary
 

Under limited supervision, performs a variety of payroll accounting activities, which require advanced professional competency of payroll accounting. Examines, analyzes, and interprets complex payroll tax functions and ensures compliance with accounting standards and federal, state, and local compliance laws and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Performs all payroll tax related accounting functions required to maintain federal, state, and local compliance and the University’s policies and procedures.
  • Monthly reconciliation of payroll accounts.
  • Works with third-party vendor regarding quarterly, annual and amendment tax filings.
  • Responsible for researching and responding timely to IRS and state agency notices.
  • Reviews payroll reports and creates appropriate payroll transactions to correct errors.
  • Oversees and coordinates the planning, implementation, and administration of programs to develop, adjust and/or enhance the automated payroll system and procedures as required, due to changes in tax law, state, and federal regulations.
  • Creates and maintains analysis reports for management review.
  • Plays a major role in setting priorities for system updates and enhancements.
  • Manages accurate and timely processing of year-end activities.  Performs quarterly and annual wage and tax reconciliation and data analysis.
  • Participates in payroll related system implementations, upgrades, and testing.  Provides technical guidance on new or updated payroll processes.
  • Reviews FAS batch accounting data, and corrects any issues found in the transactions.
  • Performs a variety of operating or cost accounting activities which require moderate knowledge of accounting theories and principles.
  • Uses in-depth knowledge and experience to perform a variety of complex operating or cost accounting activities, incorporating accounting theories and principles.
  • Develops income and balance sheet statements, consolidated statements, and various other specialized accounting statements and reports.
  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
  • Master’s degree.

Experience:

  • A minimum of three years of payroll or tax accounting experience.
  • Payroll tax experience.
  • Experience in a university or a not-for-profit organization.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:

  • Working knowledge of accounting and payroll principles, procedures and practices.
  • Superior computer skills with online and/or cloud-based applications, as well as with common Microsoft Office software (e.g., word processing, spreadsheets).

Preferred Competencies

  • Must be vigilant in monitoring tax accounts, agency notices and tracking deposits and refunds.
  • Manages interpersonal relationships and interact/communicate with clarity.
  • Act with tact and courtesy with patrons, staff, faculty, students and others.
  • Identify priorities, recognize and resolve or refer problems.
  • Work effectively without supervision and as a part of a team.
