About the role

The University of Virginia's Department of Student Health and Wellness, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is seeking to hire a full-time mental health professional for the position of Staff Psychotherapist – Embedded in the School of Architecture (SARC).

The Staff Psychotherapist – Embedded in SARC is a staff member of CAPS and provides mental health services to SARC students. The Embedded Psychotherapist also collaborates with SARC faculty, staff, and administrators to provide outreach and consultation regarding student mental health. While providing services and outreach at SARC, this Embedded Psychotherapist will also participate in staff meetings, training activities, and clinical treatment teams with colleagues working at the main CAPS office.

Competitive candidates will also have experience working with young adults, and/or adolescents in an academic setting.

Job responsibilities for the Embedded Psychotherapist include providing triage, intake assessments, and brief individual psychotherapy. In addition, the position requires coordinating care with psychiatric  and other medical providers as well as facilitating referrals for students wishing to connect with psychological and psychiatric services in the community. This position may at times engage in supervision or didactic seminars with trainees in CAPS’ APA-accredited doctoral internship in Health Service Psychology.

We seek individuals who are collaborative in nature, have strong communication skills, practice good self-care, maintain healthy boundaries, and possess the ability to manage a challenging workload while promoting a positive relational and organizational atmosphere.

Anticipated starting salary: $80,000.00-$90,000.00, candidates new to the University are eligible for a $5,000.00 recruitment bonus. This is a benefits-eligible position, employee's benefits package highlights include:

The successful candidate will pass a background check and a drug and health screen.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Licensed as a mental health professional in the Commonwealth of Virginia (or license-eligible; must be licensed within six months of hire and provide proof of credentials as part of the pre-hire process.)
  • Master's Degree in Counseling or Social Work or PhD/PsyD in Clinical or Counseling Psychology
  • At least three years of experience providing psychotherapy to adults or adolescents including a minimum of one year of experience with risk assessment and crisis intervention
  • Knowledge and competency in culturally informed therapeutic approaches
  • Experience with brief models of psychotherapy
  • Crisis management skills, including experience with risk assessment, safety planning and facilitating transfers to a higher level of care
  • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

  • Four years of experience, including working on a college or university campus
  • Providing outreach, including experience developing presentations and speaking to diverse audiences
  • Supervising therapists-in-training.
