Crossroads Cohort Advanced Graduate/Postdoctoral Fellowship

Tulane University invites applications from advanced graduate students or postdoctoral scholars  for an interdisciplinary fellowship in Africana studies and art history. The appointment is for one year and can be renewed for a 2nd year pending a successful annual review.  The successful candidate will primarily support the inaugural class of the Crossroads Cohort, a unique new graduate program offering MA and MFA pathways for artists and historians whose work engages the intersection of Africana studies and art while continuing to pursue their own research projects. 

 

Centering the interdisciplinary and global study of Africa and its diasporas, Tulane’s vibrant Africana Studies Program (ASP) is comprised of both joint and affiliate faculty drawn from across the university’s academic programs and departments. In collaboration with the Africana Studies Program Director and/or another faculty member or member, the Crossroads Cohort Fellow will develop and teach one Crossroads Cohort seminar course in the first year.

 

During the second year of the fellowship, the fellow will also oversee the Crossroads Cohort capstone project alongside Newcomb Art Department faculty and staff by teaching the curriculum’s capstone seminar workshop course. This project’s format will be determined by the cohort students, potentially resulting in an exhibition or a programming series. Supported by major funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, this project is an exciting opportunity for the cohort and fellow to organize and execute a public art history project of their own design with faculty mentorship.  

 

In addition to contributing to and participating in the Black Studies intellectual community on campus and pursuing their own research agenda, the fellow will have the chance to represent the Crossroads Cohort at relevant professional and academic conferences and travel with the cohort on research/networking trips once at least per semester. Faculty in the Africana Studies Program and Newcomb Art Department will provide mentorship to the fellow via professional development advice, access to their own scholarly networks, and opportunities for the fellow to share and receive feedback about work-in-progress. The Fellow will also receive $2000 in research funds annually and have funded travel alongside the cohort to relevant exhibitions/conferences/networking events every year.

 

Responsibilities

 

• Teaching one course in the first year, a Crossroads Cohort seminar,  for which the fellow will develop a syllabus in collaboration with the Africana Studies Program Director and/or another faculty member.

• Upon completion of a successful annual review, in the second year, the fellow wil oversee the Crossroads Cohort’s second-year capstone project alongside Tulane faculty by teaching the capstone seminar workshop course.

• Provide support for the Crossroad Cohort program, particularly by representing the program at conferences such as the College Art Association’s annual conference and on networking/research trips with cohort students and faculty.

• Working on the fellow’s own independent scholarly research and writing.

 

 

Qualifications

PhD candidates and postdoctoral scholars are eligible to apply for this fellowship. Applicants must be able to demonstrate a strong foundation in the history of African and/or African diasporic art and visual culture, and we encourage applications from specialists in these fields.
