Water Wastewater Systems Unit (WSE) – Operations Engineering (OEG) - Engineer I

Are you a recent graduate who is seeking an amazing opportunity to grow your career?  Colorado Springs Utilities is seeking to hire two engineers into entry-level position that are ideal for recent graduates or individuals with minimal experience who are eager to develop technical expertise in the water and wastewater industry. In this job you will work under the guidance of senior engineers, assisting with engineering analyses, field assessments, and project support to ensure reliable and efficient operations. 

This job will provide support for a variety of water and wastewater infrastructure systems, including finished water (treated water), raw water (untreated surface water from natural sources) and dams, tanks, pump systems, specialty valves (control valves), sanitary creek crossings, manholes, and local collectors.  

Key Areas of Focus: 

  • Engineering & Project Support
  • Assist in developing and implementing program plans for managing the condition of water and wastewater assets, including pump stations, lift stations, valves, pipes, tanks, and creek crossings
  • Collaborate with asset management staff and external contractors to design and manage risk models and predictive models to identify the probability and consequence of failure for water and wastewater assets
  • Support internally and externally executed engineering projects that include alternative analysis, condition assessments, failure analysis, operational testing, recommendations for improvements, and stakeholder engagement
  • Prepare drawings and specifications to complete operations and maintenance projects
  • Support reviews of engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documents
  • Work collaboratively with operations teams to troubleshoot and optimize system performance
  • Field Work & Condition Assessments
  • Conduct site visits to inspect and assess the condition of utility systems
  • Assist in Cathodic Protection (CP) field work, including testing and monitoring of corrosion protection systems
  • Collaboration & Professional DevelopmentWork closely with multidisciplinary teams, including operators, project managers, and senior engineers
  • Participate in training and mentorship opportunities to enhance technical skills and industry knowledge
  • Contribute to a culture of safety, innovation, and continuous improvement

Who You Are...you will have a Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Environmental, Mechanical, or related Engineering field from an ABET-accredited university and 0–2 years of experience in water, wastewater, or related engineering fields. 

  • Valid driver’s license is required for this position
  • Ability to conduct fieldwork in varying weather conditions
  • Experience with an internship or co-op is highly preferred
  • Basic understanding of water and wastewater systems
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Willingness to work in both office and field environments
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with AutoCAD or GIS is a plus
  • Positive attitude with a willingness to take on challenging tasks, find solutions and ask questions as needed
  • Certifications: Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or ability to obtain within 1 year preferred
  • Other Requirements: 
    • Travel to watersheds outside of the Colorado Springs area may be required periodically
    • This position will require the ability to work both independently as well as develop and maintain strong interpersonal relationships with individuals and groups
