Job Duties
The Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) is seeking an experienced and dynamic Director of Pharmacy to lead Pharmacy Services across its state-operated hospital system, which includes nine psychiatric hospitals, one long-term care hospital, one training center for individuals with intellectual disabilities, and one rehabilitation center for individuals with sexually violent behaviors. This key leadership role will ensure the delivery of high-quality care and foster a culture of safety within the system.
Key Responsibilities:
• Provide executive leadership for the daily management of Pharmacy Services across all DBHDS state operated facilities.
• Lead initiatives to modernize and standardize pharmacy services, focusing on quality care, efficiency, and cost-effective practices.
• Develop and oversee system-wide pharmacy programs, including the creation of standard operating procedures, operational efficiencies, and resource stewardship.
• Collaborate with clinical providers to integrate pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments tailored to individual patients.
• Ensure effective, efficient, and individualized treatment to enhance patient care and outcomes.
• Oversee pharmacy staffing allocations, training, and competency development, ensuring operational compliance across facilities.
• Direct the development and implementation of a comprehensive, standardized pharmacy management plan, including policies, procedures, and performance monitoring.
• Support the Chief Medical Officer in discharge planning and initiatives to reduce recidivism through successful community integration.
• Participate and guide Pharmaceutical and Therapeutics Committee meetings and develop and implement strategic planning for short and long-term pharmacy operations.
• This position requires intermittent travel to DBHDS facilities across the state.
Minimum Qualifications
• Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) or Baccalaureate degree in Pharmacy (BS Pharmacy) from an ACPE-accredited institution.
• Valid, unrestricted license as a registered pharmacist in Virginia.
• Proven leadership experience in a hospital or facility-based pharmacy, including management, supervision, teaching, and/or consultation.
• Strong knowledge of the development, implementation, and evaluation of pharmacy programs in multi-location systems.
• Knowledge of federal and state regulations, including Joint Commission (TJC) Accreditation and Centers for Medicaid and Medicare (CMS) Certification requirements.
• Must possess a valid driver's license
Additional Considerations
• Advanced degree in pharmacology or completion of a Pharmacy Residency/Fellowship.
• Board Certification in Psychiatric Pharmacy (BCPP) and/or Pharmacotherapy (BCPS).
• Experience delivering pharmacy services in inpatient and outpatient settings.
• Extensive knowledge of trauma-informed, recovery-oriented, and person-centered planning.
• Ability to analyze complex data and develop actionable conclusions and solutions.
• Experience in managed care, strategic planning, and fostering a high-reliability, safety-focused culture
