Job Description

The Transportation division of AECOM requires a Senior Structural Engineer to join our Bridges and Structures Design team for the New York Metro area. This position will be based in Buffalo, New York.

The successful candidate will have an established career with experience in Transportation Structures within the Upstate Buffalo, NY market. This role demands the ability to deliver a diverse range of projects for both public and private sector clients. Our Transportation business in New York comprises professional technical experts in bridges, highways, ports & marine, airports, rail, and planning disciplines.

A comprehensive understanding of delivery expectations is critical for effective leadership, as projects are executed under both conventional and alternative delivery models. The position requires providing guidance and mentorship to members of staff.  

The critical responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Spearheading the development of comprehensive proposals for clients, encompassing the delivery of studies and/or design services, and formulating precise engineering budgets and schedules.
  • Operating independently with minimal supervision while providing mentorship to junior engineers within the bridge group, ensuring the maintenance of high professional standards.
  • Conducting advanced technical analysis, including the development of innovative methods and techniques to address complex or unique structural challenges.
  • Lead technical design role and ensuring strict compliance with current design standards and regulations.
  • Executing quality control reviews of design calculations and drawings to maintain the highest level of accuracy and integrity.
  • Collaborating with technical staff to oversee design and review processes, ensuring all deliverables meet AECOM's exacting Quality Standards.
  • Developing precise construction cost estimates and technical effort projections for projects of varying scales and complexities.
  • Preparing comprehensive reports and documentation for clients, review agencies, and the public, adhering to the highest standards of professional communication.
  • Undertaking project management responsibilities, including meticulous financial oversight, quality control, and effective schedule management of assigned projects.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering plus ten years of related experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience or education.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in New York.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ideally over 15 Years in transportation structures design and build with structural design experience.
  • Master’s Degree in appropriate engineering discipline is preferred.
  • Familiarity with local Bridge Design Guidelines, Specifications and Technical Standards.
  • Experience in successfully managing structural projects.
  • Demonstrated track record of delivering a range of technical projects from new build to rehabilitation.
  • A working knowledge of Finite Element analysis and modelling.
  • Familiarity with seismic design, structural codes, building codes, bridge design guidelines, specifications and technical standards.
  • Experience in participating in multi-disciplinary engineering projects, with ability to manage and coordinate supporting design inputs: drainage, roadway, lighting, aesthetics.
  • Strong interpersonal, negotiating, problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills.
