WORK LOCATION, SCHEDULE, & TRAVEL
- Position will be based at The Energy Center in Birmingham, Alabama.
- Relocation assistance may be available if you do not already live within a reasonable commute distance.
- Work schedule (both in-office and telecommute); currently four (4) days in-office/in-the-field and one (1) day telecommute (subject to future adjustment).
- Travel 25-50%, including periodic visits to generating plants, customer sites, and project locations. Often can be one day trips.
- Limited after‑hours availability may be required to support operational issues, logistical interruptions, quality events, or contractual matters.
POSITION SUMMARY
The CCR BU Coordinator is responsible for supporting and coordinating the beneficial use (BU) program for Coal Combustion Residuals (CCR), including fly ash, bottom ash, and flue gas desulfurization (FGD) gypsum, produced by Southern Company’s coal‑fired generation fleet.
This role partners closely with plant operations, environmental affairs, fleet operations, accounting, legal, supply chain management, third‑party CCR marketers, and other coal services groups to ensure reliable handling, marketing, documentation, and reporting of CCR materials beneficially used or stored. Responsibilities include coordinating day‑to‑day operational logistics, supporting contract management and RFP activities, maintaining accurate production and sales data, and providing analytical support for forecasting, reporting, and project evaluation.
Additionally, this position supports longer‑term initiatives such as ash harvesting projects, development of new markets, improvement of data quality and consistency, and preparation of annual regulatory and internal reports. The role requires frequent cross‑functional coordination and serves as a key point of contact for plant personnel and commercial partners.
This position may be filled at Level 4, 5, or 6, depending on the candidate’s experience and qualifications.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Bachelor’s degree in business, engineering, accounting, supply chain, environmental science, or a related field preferred
- Equivalent work experience will be considered
Experience:
- Minimum 2 years of experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Coal‑fired power plant operations
- Coal combustion residuals (ash/gypsum) management or marketing
- Commercial operations, logistics, or industrial materials handling
- Contract development, negotiation, and administration
- Experience coordinating across multiple internal teams and external vendors/customers
- Familiarity with CCR beneficial use markets, environmental programs, or industrial byproduct sales is a plus
Other Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Ability to build networks and foster a collaborative environment
- Strong analytical skills with attention to detail
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint); Power BI or similar data visualization tools preferred
- Strong organizational, documentation, and data management skills
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and collaborate across functional organizations
- Comfort working in both office and industrial/plant environments
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide advocacy and education of the benefits of beneficially using CCR both internally and externally.
- Coordinate day‑to‑day CCR material production and inventory, storage, harvesting, and movement.
- Serve as a primary point of contact between generating plants, environmental affairs, contractors, and third‑party CCR marketers
- Support resolution of material quality issues, operational constraints, and supply‑demand mismatches
- Participate in planning and execution support for ash and gypsum harvesting projects
- Assist with development, administration, amendment, and renewal of CCR marketing and disposal agreements
- Support request‑for‑proposal (RFP) processes, including coordination, evaluation, and documentation
- Maintain working knowledge of contract terms to support interpretation, compliance, and issue resolution
- Interface with accounting and commercial teams to support accurate invoicing and revenue recognition
