SUMMARY Under general supervision, directs the work of the English Learner (EL) Commission, English Language Learners (ELL) services, and strategic partnership; communicates the District and department’ vision, mission and purpose to stakeholders; supervises staff to ensure implementation of English Language (EL) services.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Directs assigned staff, develops priorities, and assigns tasks and projects; assures that appropriate services are provided, and goals are defined and achieved; develops staff skills and conducts performance evaluations; meets regularly with staff to discuss and resolve priorities, workload, critical concerns, and technical issues.
  • Reviews the work of Department staff to assure the work quality and timely accomplishment of assigned duties and responsibilities, in compliance with MPS policies and quality standards.
  • Coordinates EL families and Community organization’s interaction and collaboration with Superintendent and Executive Director of Department. Attends committee meetings as required to provide planning and advocate for EL students and families.
  • Organizes and directs EL collaborative meetings for the Superintendent, Assistant to the Superintendent, and staff in the Office of Family Engagement.
  • Prepares and conducts presentations to Board, legislators, staff and community partners to inform them of the multilingual department programming and work of the ELL Commission.
  • Works with Associate Superintendents, Academic Leadership Team, and Office of Family Engagement to support efforts to build capacity across the District to integrate ELL family and community support in the instruction of every student.
  • Develops governance and support and monitors structures that align district wide partnerships with District goals creating a common vision of successful engagement across the District that maximizes school, family, and community resources in support of EL student learning.
  • Coordinates and liaisons with Office of Family Engagement to ensure compliance with federal title three regulation regarding the enrollment, assessment, and placement of EL students. Ensures communication with parents as mandated by federal and state regulations.
  • Facilitates and creates professional development that leads to long term family involvement and community partnerships. Develops and implements resources and guides to support the implementation of effective family engagement.
  • Develops and implements resources and guides to support the Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with students, clients, visitors, and MPS staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment.
  • Represents the District with external partners to communicate the District and department’s vision, mission, and purpose; and develops partnerships with various corporate, non-profit and government agencies representing diverse linguistic groups.
  • Coordinates the Department’s strategic plan, project work, and day to day operations. Interacts with sites and department’s to ensure success for the strategic plan.
