POSITION SUMMARY

 

Reporting to the Moderator of the Curia/Vicar General, or the archbishop or their designee, the Executive director of Human Resources is a strategic and hands-on leader responsible for developing and executing human resource strategy, policies, and practices in support of the mission, values, and goals of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. This individual plays a vital role in fostering a positive, inclusive workplace culture, ensuring compliance with employment laws, and building effective processes and systems to support and provide training opportunities to archdiocesan staff and volunteers. The Executive director will lead a staff of human resource professionals and guide the human resource function across talent management, employee engagement, organizational and performance management, change management, training and development, and compensation within a Catholic, nonprofit setting.

 

ESSTENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

The Executive director of Human Resources is engaged in the ministry of the archdiocese. Accordingly, the Executive director shall act in a manner consistent with the official teachings, doctrines, and laws of the Roman Catholic Church, as set forth in the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the policies of the archdiocese as set forth in the online Administrative Handbook.

 

Strategic Leadership

  • Partners with lay and clerical leadership to align human resource strategies with the mission, values, and goals of the archdiocese.
  • Leads workforce planning, succession planning, organizational development and change initiatives.
  • Evaluates existing organizational structures and provides innovative alternatives to senior leadership

 

             Talent Acquisition and Management

  • Collaborates with senior leadership to understand the organization's goals and strategy related to staffing, recruiting, and retention of mission-aligned talent.
  • Identifies staffing and recruiting needs; develops and executes best practices for hiring and talent management.
  • Manages performance appraisal systems and supports leadership development.

             Employee Relations and Engagement

  • Serves as advisor to staff and leadership and collaborates on human resources-related matters.
  • Mediates and resolves employee conflicts with a focus on fair and mission-aligned outcomes.
  • Responds to and resolves difficult and sensitive inquiries and complaints.
  • Facilitates employee engagement efforts, including staff surveys, recognition programs, and professional development.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Assists leadership in the design and administration of competitive and equitable compensation and benefit programs.
  • Conducts periodic salary benchmarking and benefits evaluations that are specific to the various archdiocesan entities.
  • Assists leadership with the oversight of employee benefits, workers compensation, health and welfare, retirement, and leave policies and their application.
  • Assists leadership in negotiations with outside vendors/brokers on employee benefits, training and development programs, human resource information system (HRIS) platforms, and payroll platforms.
  • Oversees the payroll function for the various archdiocese entities. Develops and maintains a payroll staffing structure and policies that serve the various entities’ unique characteristics while integrating with human resources and other related functions.

Compliance and Risk Management

  • Collaborates with archdiocesan counsel and risk management groups.
  • Monitors and ensures the organization's compliance with applicable federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommended best practices; reviews and modifies policies and practices to maintain compliance.
